Thomas Pettigrew (Col ’52)
Tom Pettigrew (Col ’52) published his fifth book, Contextual Social Psychology: Reanalyzing Prejudice, Voting and Intergroup Contact. The book reviews Pettigrew’s life’s work in social psychology and analyzes the 2016 vote for Donald Trump. Pettigrew is 89 years old and has been retired from the University of California, Santa Cruz for 26 years.

Thomas Pettigrew (Col ’52) has been selected to receive the Society for Experimental Social Psychology’s Scientific Impact Award, which honors psychological articles that have proven “highly influential” during past decades. The winning paper which has now been cited more than 5,300 times since it was published in 2006.

In May at the annual Harvard Commencement festivities, Thomas F. Pettigrew (Col ’52) received the Centennial Medal of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The award is given in recognition of a “significant contribution to society as a result of [his] graduate education at Harvard.” Pettigrew received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Harvard in 1956, and taught at Harvard from 1957-1980. The Graduate School Dean Meng described Pettigrew as having “…devoted his life to confronting …racism, discrimination, and prejudice and laid the groundwork for ideas that are now fundamental to the way we think about prejudice in the United States and around the world.”

Thomas Pettigrew (Col ’52) has received the American Sociological Association’s 2016 Cox-Johnson-Frazier Race Relations Award in honor of his contributions to the study and advancement of race relations and the status of disadvantaged populations. Mr. Pettigrew is a research professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Thomas Pettigrew (Col ’52) has been invited to deliver the 2015 Jos Jaspar Memorial Lecture at the University of Oxford in Oxford, U.K. Mr. Pettigrew, a research professor of social psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, focuses his work on international intergroup relations and has taught and conducted research throughout North America and Western Europe.

Thomas F. Pettigrew, B.A. Psychology ’52, will receive the Cooley-Mead Award for Lifetime Contributions to Sociological Social Psychology from the American Sociological Association in August. It is sociology’s highest award for social psychology. It will be presented to Pettigrew at the Association’s annual meeting in San Francisco.
