Gordon Kirk (Engr ’67, Engr ’69, Engr ’72 CM), professor of mechanical engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of “professor emeritus” by the Virginia Tech board of visitors. He has taught at Virginia Tech since 1985, where his work in mechanical vibrations focused on bearing and seal excited instabilities and led to a better understanding of rotating machinery. He has authored or co-authored more than 175 peer-reviewed journal and conference articles, book chapters and reviews, and holds four patents and one patent that’s pending. Mr. Kirk has also advised many master’s degree and doctoral dissertations, helping students develop successful careers in both academic and industrial settings.
