Jeffrey Kirwan (Grad ’98)
Jeffrey Kirwan (Grad ’98) received the Crown Award from the Virginia Department of Forestry, the highest civilian honor the state forester can bestow. He was recognized for his exemplary conservation efforts and outstanding research on the Commonwealth’s trees. Mr. Kirwan is a professor emeritus of forest resources and environmental conservation at Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment and serves as coordinator of Virginia’s Big Tree Program. He co-authored a book, Remarkable Trees of Virginia, which highlights trees that are extraordinary for their age, size, and historic or community significance.
Jeffrey Kirwan (Grad ’98)
Jeffrey Kirwan (Grad ’98) is professor emeritus of forestry in the College of Natural Resources at Virginia Tech and is also an Extension specialist for natural resources education for Virginia Cooperative Extension. Mr. Kirwan has been a member of the Virginia Tech community since 1978. He co-authored Remarkable Trees of Virginia, and his tree conservation efforts have garnered more publicity for the college than any other professor to date. Mr. Kirwan led a natural resources and environmental education program that annually reached 30,000 youth who planted trees and took other positive steps to care for the environment. For 20 years, he directed a comprehensive 4-H program for the citizens of Albemarle and Loudoun counties. He incorporated service learning into classes taught in both the College of Natural Resources and in the American Indian Studies Program.
