Jessica Gienow-Hecht (Grad ’90, Grad ’95 CM)
Jessica Gienow-Hecht (Grad ’90, ’95 L/M) has been acting chair of the history department in the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at Freie University Berlin since 2013. This term, she holds the Alfred Grosser Chair at the Paris Institute for Political Studies, known also as Sciences Po.

Jessica Gienow-Hecht (Grad ’90, ’95 L/M) is chair of the History Department at Freie Universität Berlin and serves as director of the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the university. She published Sound Diplomacy: Music and Emotions in Transatlantic Relations, 1850-1920 with University of Chicago Press in 2009. The book is a transnational scholarly study of the “emotional elective affinity” between Germany and America that came about through German musical culture between 1850 and 1920.

Jessica C. E. Gienow-Hecht (Grad ’95 L/M) serves is chair of the History Department at Freie Universität Berlin and serves as director of the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the university.. Her book, Sound Diplomacy: Music and Emotions in Transatlantic Relations, 1850-1920, was published in June with the University of Chicago Press. She is the editor of the series, Explorations in Culture and International History, published by Berghahn Books, New York and Oxford. Her first book, Transmission Impossible: American Journalism as Cultural Diplomacy in Postwar German, 1945-55, was published by Baton Rouge: Louisiana State U. Press and received the Stuart Bernath Prize and the Myrna Bernath Prize, both given by the Society for the History of American Foreign Relations. Her husband, Heiko Hecht (Grad ’91 L/M), is a professor of psychology at the University of Mainz, Germany. They have four children and live in Wiesbaden, Germany.
