Stanley Birch (Col ’67 CM)
Stanley F. Birch Jr. (Col ’67 L/M) received the Intellectual Property Legends Award in September from a collaboration of academic and business associations in Atlanta. He has served as a U.S. Circuit Judge for the Eleventh Circuit since 1990. Judge Birch served in the U.S. Army and is a Vietnam War veteran. He practiced law in Gainesville, Ga., and in Atlanta with Vaughan, Davis, Birch & Murphy until he took his oath of office. His practice focused on copyright law in the entertainment and computer software industries. A frequent speaker and author on the law of copyright, Judge Birch has co-authored a book on copyright with the late Professor L. Ray Patterson of the University of Georgia Law School. At the invitation of the Copyright Society of the USA, Judge Birch presented the 36th Annual Donald C. Brace Lecture on the law of copyright in November of 2006 at the New York University School of Law. The Intellectual Property Legends Award is an event hosted by Georgia State University College of Law and Georgia State University J. Mack Robinson College of Business that recognizes individuals who have made contributions to the area of intellectual property, both on the business side and the legal side.
