Brian K. Matney (Col ’87 L/M) was recently named director of secondary education for the Mecklenburg County Public Schools and to the board of directors for the Virginia Foundation for Educational Leadership. Through June 30, 2018, he also continues his work in a second two-year term on the Governor’s Standards of Learning Reform and Innovation Committee. He and his wife, Kathryn, are the proud parents of two sons, Will, a college sophomore, and J.T., a high school junior.

Brian K. Matney (Col ’87 L/M), an educator in Virginia Beach, is one of forty-six individuals across the United States and internationally to complete the Harvard University Graduate School of Education’s first offering of its certification in advanced educational leadership.  The CAEL program brings together educators on-line to study issues related to instructional innovation, professional development, evidence-based practice, and access and equity in education. Mr. Matney is married with two sons

Brian K. Matney (Col ’87 L/M) was one of eight individuals recently re-appointed by Governor Terry McAuliffe to a second two-year term on his Standards of Learning (SOL) Reform and Innovation Committee. This body of some thirty citizens was created by action of the General Assembly in 2014. The committee’s recommendations have led to legislation reducing the number of state-mandated tests and encouraging performance-based assessments. Its work is also prompting high school redesign and a re-evaluation of state graduation requirements. Matney, a long-time educator in Virginia Beach, is married to the former Kathryn Campbell, an advanced placement chemistry teacher. They are the parents of two sons, Will, a college freshman, and J.T., a high school sophomore.

Brian Matney (Col ’87 CM) has been profiled in Phi Beta Kappa’s new national member profile campaign, “Behind the Key.” In the interview, he discusses the role of the liberal arts in a contemporary approach to education. Mr. Matney is the principal of the Governor’s STEM and Technology Academy at Landstown High School in Virginia Beach, where he lives with his wife, Kathryn, and two sons, Will and J.T.

Brian Matney (Col ’87 CM) was recently elected by his peers to serve as president of the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals for the 2014-15 academic term. He also was chosen recently as vice chair of the Virginia Board of Education’s Advisory Board on Teacher Education and Licensure, and was appointed to Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s Standards of Learning Reform and Innovation committee.
