Dr. Andrew G. Lee (Col ’85, Med ’89 CM) was recently awarded the 2023 Secretariat Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The annual award from the AAO recognizes special contributions to the Academy and to the field of Ophthalmology as determined by the AAO Senior secretaries. Dr. Lee has previously received the honor award, the senior honor award, and the life achievement award from the AAO.

Dr. Andrew G. Lee (Col ’85, Med ’89 CM) has published his 12th textbook, Space Flight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS). The condition, known as SANS, is unique to long duration space flight. There is no known terrestrial equivalent.
Dr. Lee has worked as a consultant for NASA on SANS, but he has no intention of leaving Earth for the planned manned mission to Mars. Nevertheless, he remains committed to continued terrestrial research on the mysteries of SANS.

Dr. Andrew G. Lee (Col ’85, Med ’89 CM) received the Houston Methodist Hospital Outstanding Faculty Teacher award (2022) for educating medical students, residents, and fellows in ophthalmology at the Blanton Eye Institute, Houston. Dr. Lee recently completed his term as chairman of the board of directors for the North American Neuro-ophthalmology Society (NANOS) and will be assuming a new role in July 2022 as Senior Vice President for Neuro-ophthalmic Advocacy and Practice at NANOS. Dr. Lee’s daughter, Virginia Lee, will be joining the UVA class of 2026 as an Echols Scholar in the fall.

Andrew G. Lee (Col ’85, Med ’89 CM) was recently named the inaugural recipient of the Herb and Jean Lyman Centennial Chair in Ophthalmology. Dr. Lee is currently Professor of Ophthalmology, Neurology and Neurosurgery and Chairman of the Blanton Eye Institute at Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. Dr. Lee is completing his term this year as Chairman of the Board of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society and enjoys hosting his YouTube site, Neuro-Ophthalmology with Dr. Andy Lee.

Andrew G. Lee (Col ’85, Med ’89 CM) was selected as a 2021 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Awards established by the University of Texas Medical Branch McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine. The awards recognize faculty who excel in teaching students and residents in clinical settings, modeling the ideals of compassionate, scientifically sound, patient centered care, exemplified by Sir William Osler.” He writes, “I am proud to receive this award and nothing has been more challenging as an educator than teaching during a quarantine, a lockdown and a global viral pandemic.”

Lee is chairman of the Blanton Eye Institute, Houston Methodist Hospital and lives with his wife, Hilary Beaver (Med ’91), and two daughters, Virginia and Rachael .

Lee (Col ’85, Med ’89 L/M) received the Sherilyn Gordon Memorial Award for Distinguished Leadership in Professionalism and the Houston Methodist Hospital Teaching Award from both from Houston Methodist Hospital in June 2019. He was also named a 2019 Health Care Hero by the Houston Business Journal.

Dr. Lee is currently president of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society and lives in Houston, Texas, with his wife, Hilary Beaver (Med ’91) and his two daughters, Rachael and Virginia.

Lee is chair of the Blanton Eye Institute, Houston Methodist Hospital and is a professor of ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medicine, University of Texas Medical Branch, Baylor College of Medicine, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Texas A&M College of Medicine. He and his wife, Hilary Beaver (Med ’91), encourage any Wahoos visiting the Texas Medical Center to feel free to call upon them.

He is the chair of ophthalmology at The Methodist Hospital and professor of ophthalmology, neurology and neurosurgery at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Lee and his wife, Hilary A. Beaver (Med ’91), have two daughters, Rachel, 10, and Virginia, 8.
