Ralph Rives (Educ ’60) presented a lecture, “Nineteenth-Century Eastern Carolina Christmas Customs,” at the Christmas celebration of the town of Enfield, N.C., on Nov. 28, 2012, a program sponsored by the Enfield Restoration and Preservation Association. Mr. Rives’ talk focused on the years 1740-1840, the first century of Enfield’s existence, and discussed a few town legends and significant historic events, such as one of the first acts of rebellion against the British empire, recorded in 1759. Mr. Rives retired from the East Carolina University English department in 1992.
