Brian Kennelly (Grad ’89) has been named 2015-16 chief reader designate by the College Board to oversee the Advanced Placement exams in French language and culture. He will begin his four-year term in July 2016. Mr. Kennelly is a professor in the modern languages and literatures department at California Polytechnic State University.

Aniruddh Patel (Col ’87) has created a video course, Music and the Brain, for The Teaching Company’s The Great Courses series. The course explains how music serves as a link between sound processing and all the other things brains do, such as moving, planning, remembering, imagining and feeling. It also covers the evolution of musicality (and how integral it is to humanity), the neurological sources of music’s emotional power and the impact of regular engagement with music on brain structure and function. Mr. Patel is a professor of psychology at Tufts University, where his research focuses on the cognitive neuroscience of music.

Lou Tiller (Col ’85 CM) and Benjamin Henry Joyner Jr. were married on Aug. 29, 2015. The couple lives in Hampton, Virginia, and Ms. Joyner’s daughter, Megan-Drew Tiller (Col ’13 L/M), is also a UVA alumna.

K. Doran (Darden ’78) has been appointed dean of the Offutt School of Business at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. She had served since 2005 as dean of the Bertolon School of Business at Salem State University in Salem, Massachusetts, where she improved student outcomes, built relationships with the business community and raised funds for the business school. Her portfolio also includes leading roles with International Paper Corp. and ownership of aviation and consulting businesses.

Jill Tietjen (Engr ’76 CM)

Jill Tietjen (Engr ’76 CM) has been re-elected outside director for the Georgia Transmission Corp. board of directors, a position she has held since 1996. The not-for-profit cooperative owns more than 3,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines and more than 600 substations, delivering power to more than 4.1 million Georgians.

Joseph Decosimo (Col ’73 CM)

Joseph Decosimo (Col ’73 CM) has been named Chattanooga Area Manager of the Year for 2015. Local business groups recognized Mr. Decosimo for his efforts at leading Chattanooga’s biggest accounting firm, Joseph Decosimo and Co., and its merger with South Carolina’s largest accounting firm, Elliott Davis. He previously served as managing partner of Joseph Decosimo and Co., and is now office managing shareholder in the Chattanooga office of accounting firm Elliot Davis Decosimo. He has served as chairman of the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber Foundation and is a board member of the national Ethics and Public Policy Board in Washington, D.C. He and his wife, Karen, have three sons, including David Decosimo (Col ’01).

Winston Wood (Col ’72 CM) is an associate at International Business-Government Counsellors, a Washington, D.C., firm advising corporate and industry group clients on foreign policy and trade issues. He previously served as assistant director of the International Broadcasting Bureau’s policy office, writing and recording editorials explaining U.S. foreign policy to audiences overseas on the Voice of America, Radio Martí and other U.S. international broadcast operations.

J. Garrett (Com ’69 CM)

J. Garrett (Com ’69 CM) has retired from BB&T Insurance Services after having served as president and principal of Chaney Thomas Stephenson & Hill Insurance before it was acquired by BB&T. After retiring, he and Daniel “Dan” P. Collins (Com ’69 L/M) completed a seven-week, 3,000-mile bicycle ride from San Diego to St. Augustine, Florida. Mr. Garrett lives in Roanoke, Virginia, with his wife, Jan.

Daniel Collins (Com ’69 CM) has retired as senior portfolio manager and director of research at DuPont Capital Management. After retiring, he and J. Randolph “Rand” Garrett III (Com ’69 L/M) completed a seven-week, 3,000-mile bicycle ride from San Diego to St. Augustine, Florida. He lives in Asheville, North Carolina.

Edmund Clarke (Col ’67 CM)

Edmund Clarke (Col ’67 CM) has been elected University Professor Emeritus in the computer science department at Carnegie Mellon University. Before joining the Carnegie Mellon faculty in 1982, he earned a master’s degree from Duke University and a doctorate from Cornell University, and taught at Duke and Harvard universities. At Carnegie Mellon, he was the first recipient of the endowed FORE Systems Professorship in 1995 and became a University Professor in 2008. Mr. Clarke has received numerous awards for his contributions to formal verification of hardware and software correctness, including the IEEE Computer Society’s Harry H. Goode Memorial Award, ACM Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award, ACM Turing Award, CADE Herbrand Award and the International Conference on Computer-Aided Verification CAV Award. He received the 2014 Franklin Institute Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science for his work in verification of computer systems, and has received an Einstein Professorship from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and honorary doctorates from the Vienna University of Technology and the University of Crete.

Marvin Phaup (Grad ’64, Grad ’66) has been elected a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. He recently served on an international technical assistance mission to the Philippines and co-authored an article with Imtiaz Bhatti, “Budgeting for Fiscal Uncertainty and Bias: A Federal Process Proposal,” published in Public Budgeting & Finance. A professorial lecturer and research scholar at the George Washington University’s Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration, Mr. Phaup is currently working on the use of behavioral research to improve performance of federal budgeting.

Clay Moldenhauer (Col ’63) had his poem “The Flower Sutra” delivered as a part of dramatic readings by Prasanna Ramaswamy at the January 2015 annual Hindu Lit for Life conference in Chennai, India, which included works by Ramaswamy, Cheran, Kashinath Singh, Diane Ackerman, Rainer Maria Rilke, P. Sainath, Thanjai Nalvar and John F. Kennedy.

St. Leger Joynes (Col ’63 CM) has published his 22nd book, For Love and Treasure: The Life and Times of the World’s Most Successful Treasure Hunting Family. His libretto for the oratorio “The Awakening of Humanity,” written in collaboration with composer Edmund Barton Bullock, premiered in France in January 2015 and received a third performance at a French classical music festival in July 2015.

Howard Bonham (Col ’52 CM) has published A Sooner Solicits the Nation, a revised edition of his father’s memoir, The Red Cross Rainmaker. The new edition includes additional text and images that further highlight the adventures of Howard Bryan Bonham Sr., a Native American who grew up in the Cherokee Nation and became vice chair for public information and fundraising for the American Red Cross.

Allison Boulais (Col ’03 CM) and Ryan Walter Boulais (Engr ’04 L/M) welcomed a daughter, Lillian Belle, on Sept. 2, 2015. Lillian joins brother Andrew Ryan and is the niece of David Allen Wiley (Col ’00). The family lives in Richmond, Virginia. Both Mr. and Ms. Boulais work for General Electric, where he has been named an executive director of IT security.
