Joe Sutton (Grad ’89) received the James Poteet Leadership Award from the national Council for Exceptional Children’s Council for Educational Diagnostic Services division at its annual membership social in Denver in April 2012. Acknowledging his dedication to the assessment profession, CEDS named Mr. Sutton the “Father of the Nationally Certified Educational Diagnostician” for his work in establishing the NCED credential in 2007. He presently serves as project director and principal investigator of Project CREATE with the South Carolina Department of Education.

David Marcum (Col ’78)

David Marcum (Col ’78) is the supervisor of technology for Botetourt County Public Schools in Botetourt County, Va. Mr. Marcum served as an elementary school principal for 12 years before taking this new position. His wife, Cynthia Ryan Marcum (Nurs ’94) and their two children, Audra Marcum (Col ’08 L/M) and Ryan Marcum (Col ’15 L/M) are also Wahoos.

Stephanie Merhar (Col ’00 CM) married Matthew Mattone on May 5, 2012, in Lexington, Ky. Members of the wedding party included Sarah Harris Wallman (Col ’00 L/M) and Claire Moir Peters (Col ’01, Educ ’01, ’12 L/M). The couple resides near Cincinnati, where Dr. Merhar is an attending neonatologist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

She is a compliance consultant for Wells Fargo Advisors, and prior to her election as MRWBA president, acted as the bar’s chair of the mentorship, membership, programs and awards committees, vice president and president-elect. She also serves on the board of directors for the School of Performing Arts in the Richmond Community and for the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls.

Noah Kaufman (Com ’99 CM) is a systems accountant at the U.S. Department of State. Previously, he worked as a systems accountant at the Department of Homeland Security/U.S. Coast Guard as a civilian. He also coaches wrestling at Marshall High School in Falls Church, Va., and is an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland University College, where he teaches accounting software, accounting information systems and federal financial management. Mr. Kaufman lives in Arlington, Va., with his wife, Rachelle Kaufman (Col ’02), a personal trainer and group exercise leader. The couple has run several road races together.
