Colin Hunter (Col ’04 CM)
Colin Hunter (Col ’04 CM) and his business partner, C. Peyton Jenkins Sr. (Col ’04 L/M), founders of the Alton Lane custom menswear brand, opened their 11th location, on the Charlottesville Downtown Mall, in October 2016. Mr. Hunter, who was an Echols Scholar at the University, is CEO of Alton Lane, and Mr. Jenkins, who was a member of the Honor Council, is vice president. The start-up company, which opened in New York City in 2009, combines 3-D body scanning technology and fabrics from fine European mills to create laser-cut, hand-stitched garments. The appointment-only showroom is at 112 Fourth St. N.E.
Brandi Colander (Arch ’02 CM)
Brandi Colander (Arch ’02 CM) is associate vice president of natural resources and energy at the National Wildlife Federation in Washington, D.C. Previously, she served as deputy assistant secretary for land and materials management at the United States Department of the Interior and the deputy general counsel for the White House Counsel on Environmental Quality.
Peter Iorio (Grad ’99)
Peter Iorio (Grad ’99) has joined Fitzpatrick Lentz & Bubba as an attorney in the Estate Planning and Administration of Estates and Trusts group, serving Pennsylvania and New Jersey clients. Previously, he was a law clerk at Trautmann, Veres & Luther and the Law Offices of Brian J. McGovern. He also served as a legal intern for the United States Internal Revenue Service’s Office of Chief Counsel. Most recently, he was a taxation/trust and estate associate at Herold Law. He is a member of the bar associations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. District Court of New Jersey.
Rich Mehrenberg (Educ ’98)
Rich Mehrenberg (Educ ’98) has been promoted to associate professor of early, middle and exceptional education at Millersville University of Pennsylvania. Previously, he worked as a high school teacher for Fairfax County Public Schools.
Howard Turner (Engr ’97)
Howard Turner (Engr ’97) has been named director of energy contracting offerings at Trane Building Advantage. He works with Trane district offices to provide energy solutions to commercial, industrial and institutional clients. His wife, Hanna Phair Turner (Engr ’99), is a senior business manager at Capital One, where she is responsible for its credit card customer complaints program. The Turners live in Glen Allen, Virginia, with their two daughters and will soon celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary.
Natasha Espada (Arch ’93)
Natasha Espada (Arch ’93) is the founder of Studio Enée Architects. Her firm has seen significant growth in civic, institutional, higher education, interior design, residential and urban planning projects in the three years since its founding, and recently won a design competition for the Boston Society of Architects’ Unbuilt Architecture Award. Current projects include renovations to Boston Logan Airport’s Aerodrome and a master plan for the new East Boston Municipal Center.
Diane Krehmeyer (Col ’91 CM)
Diane Krehmeyer (Col ’91 CM) has been named director of admissions and marketing for the Peabody School, a pre-K to 8th-grade independent school for gifted and academically advanced students in Charlottesville. She and her husband, Dean Krehmeyer (Com ’92, Grad ’93 L/M), live in Charlottesville with their son and daughter.
Eeric Truumees (Col ’89, Med ’93 CM)
Eeric Truumees (Col ’89, Med ’93 CM) has been named professor of surgery at the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin. Previously, he was clinical director for the Harold W. Gehring Center for Biomechanical Research and Implant Retrieval at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. He has also served as adjunct faculty for the bioengineering center at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
Monica Dell’Osso (Grad ’89)
Monica Dell’Osso (Grad ’89) has been made partner in the Trusts and Estates Practice Group of Wendel, Rosen, Black & Dean in Oakland, California. Previously, Ms. Dell’Osso was partner at Burnham Brown. She focuses her practice on estate and gift tax planning, estate and trust administration, and representing clients in will and trust contestations, heirship claims, and surcharge actions against fiduciaries.
Mark Smith (Col ’85 CM)
Mark Smith (Col ’85 CM) has sold all three of his print manufacturing facilities located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia. The founder and CEO of Direct Impressions Inc. formally retired from the printing industry after 30 years in December 2014. He now owns and operates 51st Street Properties, a boutique real estate development firm specializing in resort and university properties.
Edward Karppi (Engr ’87 CM)
Edward Karppi (Engr ’87 CM) has been named chief investment officer of Mangham Associates in Charlottesville. The company provides investment management services for foundations, endowments and families. His wife, Patricia C. Karppi (Col ’88 L/M), is a litigation attorney with Greenberg & Traurig. The Karppis and their two children split their time between homes in Washington, D.C., and Howardsville, Virginia.
Donna Garban (Com ’83 CM)
Donna Garban (Com ’83 CM) has opened a bookstore in Hoboken, New Jersey, called Little City Books, named “best new business in Hoboken” by the Chamber of Commerce.
Robert Preston (Col ’83 CM)
Robert Preston (Col ’83 CM) has joined the litigation group of Sullivan & Cromwell in its New York City office as litigation analyst, focusing on multilingual litigation (Spanish, French and Portuguese). This move follows years in-house as senior attorney at Wyeth Laboratories and assistant general counsel at CDNow.com.
Elizabeth Flanagan (Grad ’83)
Elizabeth Flanagan (Grad ’83) has been named vice president emerita by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors. A retired vice president of development and university relations, Ms. Flanagan came to Virginia Tech in 2000 and immediately set to work outlining an aggressive fundraising campaign that ultimately sought to raise $1 billion, even though consultants recommended a lower goal. In November 2011, the campaign exceeded expectations thanks in part to Ms. Flanagan’s efforts. She also served as a member of the Legacy Society and the Ut Prosim Society. She created the Women in Leadership and Philanthropy initiative, served on a number of boards and was honored with the Crystal Apple Award for Teaching Excellence from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
Sharon Chidsey (Educ ’83)
Sharon Chidsey (Educ ’83) has opened a bed and breakfast in Ashland, Virginia, called The Tinder Guest House. The house is unusual in that it hosts only one group at a time in more than 2,000 square feet.
Paul Lombardo (Grad ’82, Law ’85)
Paul Lombardo (Grad ’82, Law ’85) has been chosen by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia as a Regents Professor, the highest academic appointment in that system. Mr. Lombardo holds the Bobby Lee Cook chair in the College of Law at Georgia State University in Atlanta.
Maureen Wigge (Engr ’81 CM)
Maureen Wigge (Engr ’81 CM) has been promoted to director of programs for the Electronic Warfare and Communications department of SRC, Inc. Ms. Wigge has 35 years of experience supporting Department of Defense technology development and has been a member of the SRC team for eight years.
Stanley Joynes (Col ’77, Law ’81 CM)
Stanley Joynes (Col ’77, Law ’81 CM) is CEO of Valley Road Vineyards, a farm winery in Albemarle County that celebrated its grand opening in August 2016. The ownership group includes Paul W. Kreckman (Grad ’76) and Robert L. Edwards (Com ’77, Grad ’81, Law ’83 L/M).
Gary Kriebel (Engr ’91 CM)
Gary Kriebel (Engr ’91 CM) has accepted the position of manager of information systems at the University of Virginia Athletics Department. He and his wife, Gretchen Blankenship Kriebel (Col ’98 L/M), live in Charlottesville with their two children.
Don Mitchell (Col ’98 CM)
Don Mitchell (Col ’98 CM) is chairman of the division of languages and literature and associate professor of English at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. He continues to serve as co-chair of the International Conference on the Blues with his wife, a music professor at Delta State. He is a former president of the Delta State University Faculty Senate, and he is the public address announcer for the Delta State Fighting Okra football and basketball teams. Mr. Mitchell and Ms. Collins are the proud parents of a six-year-old son.
