Group Health Welcomes Sue Kozik as Its Chief Information Officer

SEATTLE, Aug. 15, 2014 – Sue Kozik joined Group Health on July 21 as executive vice president and chief information officer (CIO).

In this role Kozik is responsible for leading the Group Health’s information technology (IT) organization, guiding the IT strategy and technology investments for the enterprise. She is also leading the Cooperative’s efforts to bring together all its IT functions and teams, including those supporting Care Delivery, Health Plan, enterprise IT, and Informatics. Kozik will also serve as a member of Group Health’s Executive Leadership Team, contributing to the top-level strategic agenda for the entire organization.

Most recently Kozik was senior vice president and CIO at Independence Blue Cross in Philadelphia, where she had an impressive record of leading IT change that contributed significantly to achieving her organization’s strategic business objectives.

“Sue is a smart, strategic, and engaging leader who will be a tremendous complement to our team,” said Group Health President and CEO Scott Armstrong. “During an extensive national search to fill this new role, Sue impressed our interview panel with her broad knowledge and multi-industry background. Her hiring supports Group Health’s need to enhance its leveraging of IT and analytics.”

In addition to having many years’ experience in health insurance, Kozik has held major leadership roles in other complex industries, including energy, financial services and technology. She is a proven leader who knows how to navigate through both company-specific and industry-wide change.

Prior to Independence Blue Cross, Kozik worked in the energy industry leading both smart-grid and retail transformation initiatives at Direct Energy in Pittsburgh, PA and OGE in Oklahoma City, OK. She also served as executive vice president and chief technology officer of TIAA-CREF, the leading provider of retirement services, where she centralized 23 separate IT departments while overseeing significant improvements in service. At Cigna, the global health services company, she was responsible for global IT operations.

Kozik is also a community and industry leader, generously sharing her time and energy in ways that have garnered numerous awards and recognitions. She currently serves on the Bates College Board of Trustees, Tech Impact Board of Directors, and the TaaSera Advisory Board, a cyber-security company focused on intrusion detection and forensic analysis.

Kozik earned a bachelor’s degree in History from Bates College in Lewiston, ME. She also holds executive education certifications from Harvard University and the University of Virginia.

She recently completed her fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Brigham and Women’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School. She and her husband Michael live in Memphis with their new baby, Elizabeth “Ellie” Cambre Bailey, who was born May 19th.

The family resides in Memphis, Tenn., where Mr. Bailey serves as vice president and equity analyst for NewSouth Capital Management and Dr. Bailey, who recently completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility with Harvard Medical School at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is director of minimally invasive surgery at Fertility Associates of Memphis.
