MONICA EVANS (Col ’89 CM)
Monica Holman Evans (Col ’89 CM), executive director, DC Board of Elections, has been certified as an Elections & Registration Administrator, from the National Association of Election Officials, the highest professional achievement for election officials. Evans is one of the few African American chief executive elections officers in the United States.
Evans brings broad legal experience to the position of executive director beyond her senior leadership role at DCBOE. Prior to her position as executive director, Evans served as the senior policy advisor on election operations and policy implementation. A Certified Elections & Registration Administrator designation is achieved only through a multi-year course of study taught by the Auburn University’s master’s in public administration faculty.
William Wilson (Law ’63)
William T. Wilson (Law ’63) received the 2022 Edward L. Chambers Jr. Award. The award was established in 2020, after Ed’s sudden passing, to recognize volunteers who have devoted significant time to the Virginia State Bar.
Wilson’s service to the Bar began in 1991 when he served on the Committee to Study Mail Ballot Procedures, and he has remained steadfast volunteer for over three decades. He is a past chair of the Conference of Local Bar Associations and a past chair of the Senior Lawyers Conference (SLC). His tenure with the SLC was distinguished by the development of a Senior Citizens Law Day Program which has been a statewide program of the VSB.
He has held various positions with the VSB including as a member of the Judicial Nominations Committee, the Executive Committee, the Bar Council (three times on the Executive Committee), the Professionalism Committee, Professionalism Course Faculty and chair of the Computer Study Committee. He is a former member of the Judicial Candidates Evaluation Committee (JCEC) and is currently (2022) serving on VSB Council. He was appointed by Chief Justice Donald W. Lemons to the Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee (JEAC) and is serving presently (2022).
Wilson has been practicing law in Covington since 1963, when he joined Senator Michael Hale “Hale” Collins. He was senior partner in the law firm of Wilson, Updike & Nicely until December 31, 2018. In his legal career, Wilson has served as a substitute judge for the County Court of Alleghany; president of the Alleghany-Bath-Highland Bar Association; president of the Virginia Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA); and was a member of the Boyd Graves Conference. In 2016, he was awarded the “Champion of Justice trophy” by the Virginia ABOTA Chapter. Additionally, Wilson served in the Virginia House of Delegates for 16 years (1974-89). As a delegate, he served on many committees and commissions, including the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission(JALARC).
Helen White (Col ’69 CM)
Jean White (Col ’69 CM) is again president of the American News Women’s Club, Washington, D.C. She retired from U.S. Department of State – class of 1997 – under the auspices of Secretary Madeleine Albright.
Michael Steger (Col ’89, Grad ’93, Law ’93 CM)
Michael D. Steger (Col ’89, Law ’93, Grad ’93 CM) has been appointed co-chair of the American Bar Association’s Solo & Small Firm Litigation Committee. He practices intellectual property, entertainment and business law in New York City.
Peter Curry (Grad ’74 CM)
Peter L. Curry (Grad ’74) has been selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America© 2023 for Economic Development Law.
Edward Coleman (Col ’04)
Ed Coleman (Col ’04) has been included in the Best Lawyers in America 2023 edition for his practices in Insurance Litigation and Personal Injury Litigation-defendants. Recognition is by peer review. Only 5% (approximately) of U.S. lawyers are selected for inclusion in the publication.
Frank Macgill (Com ’91)
Frank S. Macgill (Com ’91), a partner at HunterMaclean, a law firm with offices in Savannah and St. Simons Island, Georgia, was recently selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America© 2023. Founded in 1983, Best Lawyers is an annual publication that recognizes attorneys for outstanding achievements in their areas of practice. Attorneys are selected through peer-review surveys that have been completed by thousands of leading lawyers who confidentially evaluate their peers.
Frank was also noted as a “Lawyers of the Year” in the practice area of Tax Law.
Andrew Lee (Med ’89 CM)
Dr. Andrew G. Lee (Col ’85, Med ’89 CM) received the Houston Methodist Hospital Outstanding Faculty Teacher award (2022) for educating medical students, residents, and fellows in ophthalmology at the Blanton Eye Institute, Houston. Dr. Lee recently completed his term as chairman of the board of directors for the North American Neuro-ophthalmology Society (NANOS) and will be assuming a new role in July 2022 as Senior Vice President for Neuro-ophthalmic Advocacy and Practice at NANOS. Dr. Lee’s daughter, Virginia Lee, will be joining the UVA class of 2026 as an Echols Scholar in the fall.
Gregory Harrell (Col ’95 CM)
Gregory C. Harrell (Col ’95 CM) has been elected to serve on the 2022–2023 Florida Court Clerks & Comptrollers (FCCC) Executive Committee. Harrell, Marion County Clerk of Court and Comptroller, was installed as the association’s incoming Secretary during FCCC’s summer conference June 8 in Orlando.
Harrell is the newest member of the FCCC Executive Committee and will serve a one-year term as secretary.
FCCC is a statewide, nonprofit member association composed of Florida’s Clerks of the Circuit Court and Comptrollers. Melody Weigel (Col ’06)
Melody Robertson Weigel (Col ’06 CM) won the Ben Fry Service to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock award for her dedication to promoting and advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Her passion is increasing the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community. She also serves as the adviser for the OutLaw Legal Society at the university’s William H. Bowen School of Law and works in the admissions office.
Phillip Weinstein (Com ’17)
Phillip Weinstein (Com ’17) has been named one of Nashville’s Top 30 Under 30 professional and philanthropic leaders for 2022, as selected by a committee of business leaders, philanthropic influencers, and young professionals across Middle Tennessee.
Honorees will participate in a 16-week development program challenging themselves and growing their skill sets through a philanthropic competition raising funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Weinstein and the other members of this year’s class will be honored at the Nashville’s Top 30 Under 30 celebration gala in August.
Darryl Hobbs (Law ’93)
Darryl Hobbs (Law ’93), Chief Legal Officer of Interos, has been appointed to the Thinking Huts Board of Directors. Prior to joining Interos, Hobbs served in numerous senior leadership roles during his 19 years at Microsoft, including as Assistant General Counsel in Microsoft’s Corporate, External and Legal Affairs organization. Before Microsoft, Darryl led a business development team for AOL Time Warner, served as in-house counsel for IBM and practiced commercial law at a large international law firm.
Emily Andrews (Col ’06)
Emily Longenecker Andrews (Col ’06 CM) was selected as Newport News Division Teacher of the Year, 2022-2023. Andrews has been the lead social studies teacher at Hines Middle School in Newport News, Virginia, since 2018. She previously taught at Riverbend High School in Spotsylvania, Virginia, after a career in international development.
Khalil Simon Andraos (Com ’06)
Khalil Andraos (Com ’06), Merrill Lynch Wealth Management financial advisor, was recently named to the 2022 Forbes “Best-In-State Wealth Advisors” list for Virginia. Andraos is a Certified Financial Planner, a designation awarded by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. He also holds a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor designation.
James Guy (Col ’87)
Jim Guy (Col ’87 CM), Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative’s General Counsel and Vice President of Administration, has been appointed by Governor Glenn Youngkin to serve on the Virginia State Air Pollution Control Board.
JoAnne Mancini (Col ’90 CM)
JoAnne Mancini (Col ’90 CM) was admitted to the Royal Irish Academy on May 20, 2022. Chartered in 1785, the RIA is Ireland’s leading body of experts in the sciences and humanities. Membership is by election and is considered the highest academic honor in Ireland. Mancini lives in Dublin and Berlin, and is the 2021-2022 Terra Visiting Professor at the Department of Culture, John F. Ed Price (Col ’84), Charlottesville Firehouse Subs restaurant owner and operator, was recently awarded an Axe Award for Mid-Atlantic Franchisee of the Year. This award recognizes high performing franchises throughout Firehouse Subs and honors Price for his strong commitment to his community.
In the Firehouse Subs system of more than 1,210 restaurants, this award recognizes Price as an exemplary business owner that has earned this achievement through an increased focus on Firehouse Subs’ core values, setting high standards, giving back to the community and increasing guest satisfaction.
Price attributes his business success to focusing on guest satisfaction, his involvement within the community and commitment to public safety. One of his favorite parts about being a Firehouse Subs business owner is the portion of every purchase that benefits the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, which has donated 117 grants worth $1.7 million to help first responders and public safety organizations in Virginia. Most recently, Price’s efforts helped secure a $27,000 grant for the Charlottesville Fire Department, allowing them to purchase much-needed bunker gear and personal protective equipment. Price is also a longtime supporter of the Tom Sox and the Red Cross.
Christopher Stanley (Com ’76)
Chris Stanley (Com ’76) was recently named Professor Emeritus in the Department of Theology and Franciscan Studies at St. Bonaventure University in western New York. He retired from the university in 2021 after 22 years as a professor at St. Bonaventure. Dr. Stanley has authored or edited seven academic books and two historical novels, together with dozens of professional articles and papers, in his 31 years in academia. He is looking forward to continuing his writing in retirement. He lives in Allegany, New York, but plans to move to southern California in the next year.
Richard Mines (Engr ’77)
Dr. Richard O. Mines Jr. (Engr ’77), Mercer University School of Engineering professor, was named Engineer of the Year by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia.
The Georgia Society of Professional Engineers coordinates the Engineer of the Year awards, which are judged by the Engineering Council of Birmingham. The purpose of the awards is to honor licensed engineers who have made outstanding contributions to the engineering profession, public welfare and/or humankind.
Dr. Mines received the Engineer of the Year Award as the overall highest scoring nominee from the categories of Engineer of the Year in Construction, Education, Government, Industry and Private Practice. He received the honor during the 2022 Georgia Engineering Awards held Mar. 19 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta.
Dr. Mines is a professor of environmental and civil engineering at Mercer. He has served in academia for 34 years and consulting for seven years, specializing in the design of water and wastewater treatment facilities. He also serves as startup coordinator for the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in civil engineering degrees at Mercer, where he has taught since 1998. He was previously on the faculty of the University of South Florida, where he was twice named Civil Engineering Professor of the Year.
