Kevin LaPorta (Engr ’09)
Kevin LaPorta (Engr ’09) and Jennifer Murphy LaPorta (Col ’10 L/M) welcomed a daughter, Lillian Ann, on April 6, 2016. The family resides in Philadelphia, where Mr. LaPorta is a manager at KPMG and Dr. LaPorta is a family medicine resident at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Matthew Carroll (Engr ’08)
Matthew Carroll (Engr ’08) received the Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association’s Emerging Leadership Award for his contributions to the association’s Lexington-Concord, Massachusetts, chapter. As director of the chapter’s events and scholarships, he modified the chapter’s procedures for function sponsorship, coordination and execution. Mr. Carroll also received the association’s Distinguished Young AFCEAN Award in 2013.
Marc Heisel (Engr ’07)
Marc Heisel (Engr ’07) and Ariel Brianne King (Engr ’13 L/M) were married on March 12, 2016, at the UVA Chapel. The couple lives in Frederick, Maryland, where Mr. Heisel is a manufacturing engineer for Phoenix Mecano. Ms. King is a systems engineer for L-3 Communications in Leesburg, Virginia.
Laura Silverman (Col ’05)
Laura Silverman (Col ’05) is the founder of the Sobriety Collective, an online community dedicated to addiction recovery and mental health awareness. The website features content tailored to creatives.
Andrew Cookingham (Col ’05 CM)
Andrew Cookingham (Col ’05 CM) has been named a 2016 “Rising Star” by Texas Super Lawyers. Mr. Cookingham works in the Dallas office of Thompson & Knight, where he focuses his practice on business litigation and dispute resolution.
Justin Marlles (Col ’04, Law ’07)
Justin Marlles (Col ’04, Law ’07) has been named a partner in the law firm of Baker & McKenzie. He works in the firm’s Houston office, where he focuses his practice on complex international arbitration and litigation. Mr. Marlles represents businesses across a wide range of industries, including aviation, finance and energy.
Sara Stinnett (Col ’03, Law ’08)
Sara Stinnett (Col ’03, Law ’08) has been elected a partner in the law firm Jackson Walker. She works in the firm’s Austin, Texas, office, where she is a member of the investment funds practice group. Her practice focuses on representation of institutional investors in connection with their investments in private equity funds and other alternative investments.
Emily Dowling (Col ’02)
Emily Dowling (Col ’02) and Jeff Rudnicki (Darden ’11) welcomed their second child, a son, Davis Matheson, on June 20, 2015. Davis joins sister Maisie, 3, and is the nephew of Stuart Dowling (Com ’05). The family lives in Winchester, Massachusetts.
Jeff Evans (Arch ’00)
Jeff Evans (Arch ’00) has been named a principal at HKIT Architects in San Francisco. He is currently managing two projects for schools in the Bay Area, one of which, Glenview Elementary, will be a net-zero energy building. Mr. Evans’ work emphasizes the synthesis of sustainability, function and innovative design in learning environments that accommodate the needs of 21st-century students.
Traci Thompson (Col ’99)
Traci Thompson (Col ’99) has joined the law firm of Kantrow Spaht Weaver and Blitzer in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she will be leading the firm’s transactional and regulatory health care practice. Ms. Thompson has been named a “Rising Star” in health care by Louisiana Super Lawyers for the past several years and has received a Martindale-Hubbell peer review rating of “AV Preeminent.” She is also the co-author of the children’s book Goodnight Cavaliers.
Daniel Stern (Com ’99, Law ’07)
Daniel Stern (Com ’99, Law ’07) has been named a partner in the law firm Baker & McKenzie. He works in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office, where he focuses his practice on business taxation matters, including international and domestic tax planning for mergers, acquisitions and other corporate transactions.
Louise Sinks (Col ’99)
Louise Sinks (Col ’99) has been named one of Florida High Tech Corridor’s 2016 “Faces of Technology.” The initiative recognizes the efforts of scientists and technologists at Florida-based organizations that drive innovation. Ms. Sinks is vice president of U.S. Nano, where she develops nanomaterials for printed technologies.
Nora Macklin (Col ’98)
Nora Macklin (Col ’98) assisted with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Ebola vaccine trial in Sierra Leone. She provided technical assistance to local field staff in the vaccination phase of the trial. Ms. Macklin works in Richmond as a CDC federal field assignee with the Virginia Department of Health’s Division of Immunization.
Elizabeth Brunins (Col ’98, Grad ’99 CM)
Elizabeth Brunins (Col ’98, Grad ’99 CM) has been named a partner in the law firm of Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott. She works in the firm’s Pittsburgh office, where she counsels hospitality industry clients, negotiating hotel management, lender subordination, franchise and purchase and sale agreements. In addition, she serves as outside counsel to help companies develop and launch marketing promotions.
Claudia Hanna (Col ’97 CM)
Claudia Hanna (Col ’97 CM) has returned to Virginia with her husband, Ant Veysel; and two children after living on Cyprus for eight years. She now writes, teaches and speaks about how to live more like a Mediterranean. Ms. Hanna teaches several Mediterranean diet cooking classes at James Madison University and writes for C-VILLE Weekly and Women Who Live on Rocks. She also runs her own blog, Live Like a Goddess.
Todd Friedlander (Arch ’95 CM)
Todd Friedlander (Arch ’95 CM) was recently named a principal at ACG Architects in Washington, D.C., a firm that specializes in residential, hospitality, commercial and diplomatic projects. He will share in the operational responsibilities for the firm while continuing to perform his ongoing project duties. Mr. Friedlander is the son of Mark P. Friedlander Jr. (Col ’51, Law ’57 L/M).
Bradley Sugarman (Col ’94)
Bradley Sugarman (Col ’94) has been included in the 2016 issue of Indiana Super Lawyers. Mr. Sugarman works in the Indianapolis office of Taft Stettinius & Hollister, where he is a member of the firm’s environmental law practice group. His practice focuses on a range of environmental issues, including defending clients in toxic tort and environmental litigation in state and federal courts.
Richard Deaner (Col ’94)
Richard Deaner (Col ’94) has received the 2016 University System of Georgia Board of Regents’ Teaching Excellence Award, the highest honor for faculty at public universities in Georgia. He also received Augusta University’s Outstanding Teaching Award in 2013 and the President’s Special Merit Award from the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision in 2012. Mr. Deaner is a professor of counselor education at Augusta University.
Ellsworth Johnson (Col ’92)
Ellsworth Johnson (Col ’92) was promoted to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army. He currently serves as the military deputy for the Army Contracting Command-Redstone at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, a position he has held since July 2015. His previous assignment was as the executive officer for the principal deputy assistant secretary of the Army for acquisition, logistics and technology in Washington, D.C. Col. Johnson and his wife, Terri, live in Madison, Alabama, with their two children, Nicholas and Zachary.
Ahngelique Davis (Col ’92 CM)
Ahngelique Davis (Col ’92 CM) has become certified as a U.S.A. Field Hockey Olympic umpire. She is also a certified girls’ and boys’ U.S. Lacrosse coach and serves on the U.S. Lacrosse men’s game committee. She was recently interviewed by U.S. Lacrosse about the influence of inclusion and diversity on the sport.
