Katie Botha (Col ’99)
Katie Botha (Col ’99) is vice president of development and communications at Special Olympics Virginia’s state headquarters. Prior to joining Special Olympics in 2007, Ms. Botha worked in sports media in Europe and sport-based nonprofits in Africa. She resides in Richmond with her husband, East; and their two children.
Haywood Rhodes (Educ ’03)
Haywood Rhodes (Educ ’03) and his wife, Virginia, welcomed twin boys Jonah James and Matthew Haywood on January 8, 2014. The family resides in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
Katherine Newell (Col ’04 CM)
Katherine Newell (Col ’04 CM) and her husband, Bill, welcomed a daughter, Collier Elizabeth, on June 1, 2014. Collier joins big brother Parker, 4, and big sister Reese, 2. The family resides in Jefferson, Ga.
Stacey Albrecht (Col ’02)
Stacey Albrecht (Col ’02) and Arno Yurk were married on May 9, 2014, in Palm Springs, Calif. The couple resides in Chicago, where Ms. Yurk is an employee benefits consultant with Alliant Insurance Services and Mr. Yurk is director of global client services with Eze Software Group.
Matt Crafton (Col ’03)
Matt Crafton (Col ’03) was recently appointed winemaker at Chateau Montelena Winery in Calistoga, Calif. He and his wife, Julie, live in Napa, Calif., with their sons William August, 2, and Benjamin Becket, 5 months.
Wesley Martin (Col ’97 CM)
Wesley Martin (Col ’97 CM) was recently promoted to the rank of commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He is a 2014 recipient of the Rear Admiral Hugh Howell Award for outstanding legal work in the Navy Reserve.
Bruce Clurman (Col ’81 CM)
Bruce Clurman (Col ’81 CM) was recently appointed the José Carreras/E. Donnall Thomas Endowed Chair for Cancer Research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. Dr. Clurman is a member of the divisions of clinical research and human biology at the FHCRC and a professor of medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. His laboratory research studies basic problems in cancer biology, and his clinical practice involves the use of marrow and stem cell transplantation to treat patients with blood cancers. He lives in Seattle with his wife, Deb.
David Need (Grad ’93, Grad ’04)
David Need (Grad ’93, Grad ’04) is a visiting instructor in the department of religious studies at Duke University. He recently published Roses: The Late French Poetry of Rainier Maria Rilke, pairing each of Rilke’s 27 Roses poems in the original French with English translations and a scholarly essay, illustrated with pen-and-ink drawings by Clare Johnson.
Melissa Hudson (Col ’08 CM)
Melissa Hudson (Col ’08 CM) and Justin Arthur Ritter were married on May 16, 2014. Ms. Ritter is the daughter of Michael J. Hudson (Engr ’73 L/M). The couple resides in Charlottesville, where Ms. Ritter is an attorney in the law firm of Tremblay & Smith.
Claire Marti (Col ’88 CM)
Claire Marti (Col ’88 CM) published a memoir about her breast cancer diagnosis, Come Ride with Me Along the Big C in May 2014. The book describes how cancer redirected her life path and explores how yogic wisdom helped her to find hope in dark circumstances. Ms. Marti, a fully certified Pilates instructor and registered Yoga Alliance instructor, is co-founder and chairperson of Yoga for Hope—San Diego, the largest yoga fundraiser in Southern California, and is the creator of the Yoga for Cancer Recovery DVD. She speaks frequently on the power of yoga and meditation for cancer patients and survivors, and recently relocated from San Diego to Denver with her husband.
James Graham (Arch ’69, Arch ’72 CM)
James Graham (Arch ’69, Arch ’72 CM) has been appointed president of the board of trustees for the Hammond-Harwood House Association Inc. He began the two-year term in May 2014. The founder of Graham Landscape Architecture in Annapolis, Md., Mr. Graham has served on the Hammond-Harwood House Association’s board of trustees for seven years and is a fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
Niki McCarthy (Col ’08)
Niki Davila (Col ’08) and Johnny McCarthy were married on March 8, 2014. The couple resides in Honolulu, where Mrs. McCarthy works for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Mr. McCarthy is a third-year medicine resident with the U.S. Army. The wedding party included Shawn Holt Pennetti (Col ’08), Christine Cadigan (Col ’08), Allyson Gill (Nursing ’08), and Filipp Kofman (Col ’07).
Maureen Cook (Col ’82 CM)
Maureen Cook (Col ’82 CM) was inducted as a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. She is the chief operating officer of Commonwealth Orthopaedics in Fairfax, Va. Her daughter, Colleen Michelle Cook (Col ’14 L/M), is a recent graduate of the University.
Jinny Parron (Col ’05 CM)
Jinny Parron (Col ’05 CM) graduated from the Assistant Director Training Program on June 30, 2014, and joined the Directors Guild of America. She currently resides in Los Angeles, where she works as an assistant director in TV and film.
Kathryn Harris (Engr ’02 CM)
Kathryn Harris (Engr ’02 CM) is special assistant to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. She was previously the senior director for Egypt at the office of the assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs.
J. Allen (Col ’99 CM)
J. Allen (Col ’99 CM) has founded Locum Line, a website for health care professionals to find and rate locum tenens, or temporary jobs, learn about the industry and network with colleagues and placement agencies worldwide. Dr. Allen has worked as a physician in New Zealand and various U.S. states, including Hawaii.
Benjamin Scribner (Col ’96 CM)
Benjamin Scribner (Col ’96 CM) and his wife, Hilary, welcomed a daughter, Julia Lorelei, on April 28, 2014. Julia joins big sister Virginia Lillian. Julia and Virginia are the granddaughters of Willard M. Scribner (Arch ’71 L/M) and the nieces of Elizabeth Scribner Forness (Col ’92), Abigail Davis Spanberger (Col ’01), Adam Spanberger (Engr ’02) and Meredith Davis (Col ’11 L/M). The family resides in Richmond, Va.

Jennifer Christiaansen (Arch ’97 CM) and her husband, Jason, welcomed a son, Frederick Louis, on Jan. 6, 2014. Frederick joins big brother Henry Oliver, 3. The family resides in Edina, Minn.
George Coussoulos (Educ ’65)
George Coussoulos (Educ ’65) recently published The Transformation of Thomas Jefferson: The Dilemma of Slavery, a speculative book of fiction that sorts through the racism that permeated every aspect of 19th-century society. Mr. Coussoulos holds a master’s degree in educational psychology and previously wrote a book for educators, Behind Closed Doors: Every Teacher’s Chance to Change the World, published in 2004.
