James Block (Col ’68 CM)
James C. Block will retire at the end of June 2014 after 43 years of teaching English at Northfield Mount Hermon School. He taught on exchanges at Marlborough College, Wiltshire, England and at Robert College, Istanbul. He and his wife Penny will live in Chestertown, Md.

Mark Scharf (Col ’84 CM)
Mark Scharf (Col ’84 CM) was a contributing participant playwright at the 2014 Sewanee Writers’ Conference, hosted by the University of the South in July and August.
Ryann Laden (Educ ’14)
Ryann McKinley Laden and Kevin Laden welcomed a daughter, Jane Violet, on April 3, 2014. She joins a sister, Ruby Colleen, 6, and a brother, Sam Michael, 2.
Steven Harvey (Grad ’89)
Steven Harvey (BA ’71) will retire after thirty-eight years of teaching English at Young Harris College. He is the author of three books of essays including Bound for Shady Grove (Georgia) and will continue as a founding faculty member in the low-residency M.F.A. program in creative writing at Ashland University in Ohio. Last year his essay “The Book of Knowledge” was selected by Cheryl Strayed for The Best American Essays 2013.
Pierce Louis (Col ’01)

Pierce Louis (Col ’01) launched Dirt Hugger, a regional composting company based in the Pacific Northwest that turns organic waste into nutrient-rich compost, as a startup in 2010. Dirt Hugger has since composted more than 20,000 tons of material previously destined for landfills and has sold over 10,000 yards of organic compost to 825 unique farmers, growers and gardeners. The company is currently raising funds for a new facility that will help create a long-term composting infrastructure.
Erika Caruso (Col ’05, Educ ’05 CM)

Erika Caruso (Col ’05, Educ ’05 CM) and Erika Glavan Caruso (Col ’05, Educ ’05 L/M) welcomed their first child, a daughter, Charlotte Jane, on April 21, 2014. The family resides in Menlo Park, Calif.
Maureen Graham (Col ’89 CM)
Maureen Graham (Col ’89 CM) returned to Charlottesville more than 10 years ago to lead the Darden Annual Fund. After working in business for nearly 20 years, she has spent the last two years working toward a Virginia teacher’s license with an endorsement in special education. Ms. Graham currently works for Albemarle County Public Schools, where her daughter Margaret attends kindergarten.

Kevin Clouther (Col ’01)
Kevin Rogers Clouther (Col ’01) and Ericka Alonso Clouther (Law ’08) welcomed their second child, Miranda Rogers, on April 20, 2014. The family resides in Floral Park, N.Y.
Shannon Groff (Col ’98 CM)

Shannon Groff (Col ’98 CM) and Todd Hurlbut (Col ’98 L/M) welcomed a daughter, Corinne Alexandrine Hurlbut, on April 20, 2014. Corinne joins big brother Lachlan, age 2. The family lives in the San Francisco Bay area, where Ms. Groff is a public finance analyst and Mr. Hurlbut is an investment adviser.
Richard Moore (Col ’02, Educ ’06 CM)
Richard Moore (Col ’02, Educ ’06 L/M) and Page Malmsjo Moore (Col ’02) welcomed their second child, Mason Malmsjo, on April 17, 2014. Mason joins his sister, Grace 3. The family resides in Columbia, SC where Richard is a high school Special Education teacher and Page is a Clinical Instructor for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
Avery Lee (Col ’12)
Avery Lee (Col ’12) received a master of social work degree from the School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May 2014. She and her husband, Charles Allan McCoy (Grad ’08, ’13 L/M), will relocate to Burlington, Vt., for Mr. McCoy to begin as an assistant professor in the sociology department of SUNY Plattsburgh.

Philip Dales (Arch ’10)
Philip Dales (Arch ’10) is an associate in the Annapolis, Md., law firm of Hyatt & Weber. Mr. Dales counsels clients on land use matters, including rezoning, special exceptions, variances, planned development applications, comprehensive planning and comprehensive zoning. He also assists clients with other real property and administrative law matters.
Amna Khokar (Col ’09 CM)
Amna Khokar (Col ’09 CM) received an M.D. degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in May 2013 and is currently a general surgery resident at the Medical College of Virginia Health System in Richmond, Va.
Geoffrey Brown (Col ’09)
Geoffrey Brown (Col ’09) was promoted to associate producer at ESPN in Bristol, Conn., where he works on the network’s College Game Day program.
Hilah Barbot (Col ’09 CM)
Hilah Barbot (Col ’09 CM) is one of eight recipients of the 2014 Teach for America Excellence in Teaching Award. A sixth-grade science teacher at KIPP Central City Academy in New Orleans, she orchestrates a science fair each year where students write and conduct their own experiments in front of a panel of judges. Ms. Barbot is also a blended learning director, content leader and writes all science benchmarks for the KIPP schools in New Orleans.
David Ogburn (Engr ’08 CM)
David Ogburn (Engr ’08 CM) and Allison Rutherford (Engr ’08 L/M) were married on April 21, 2012, at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas.
Caitlin Kozan (Col ’08 CM)
Caitlin Kozan (Col ’08 CM) and George Hunter were married on Oct. 19, 2013, in Cleveland, where the couple resides. Both Mr. and Ms. Hunter are lawyers at the law firm of Jones Day.
Matthew Carroll (Engr ’08)

Matthew Carroll (Engr ’08) received the Distinguished Young AFCEAN Award for his record of achievement in supporting the Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association International and its Lexington-Concord chapter in Massachusetts. He was recognized for building a chapter sponsorship program that helped the chapter receive its first sponsorships in 2013.
Brian Katzenberg (Col ’07 CM)
Brian Katzenberg (Col ’07 CM) and Courtney E. Douglas were married on Dec. 28, 2013. The couple resides in Baltimore, where Mr. Katzenberg practices law and Ms. Katzenberg is an elementary school teacher.

Elaine Flory (Col ’07 CM)
Elaine Flory (Col ’07 CM) received a doctor of veterinary medicine degree in May 2014 from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, where she was a student member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and a member of the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology. She was also one of eight recipients of Virginia Tech’s 2014 Outstanding Graduate Award, which recognizes exceptional academic achievement and leadership from each of the university’s eight colleges.
