Nicholas Lawton (Grad ’05)

Nicholas Lawton (Grad ’05) and his wife, Elizabeth, recently welcomed a baby girl, Ella Grace. She was born May 13, 2010, in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Preston Green (Col ’89 CM)
Preston Green (Col ’89 L/M) is a full professor in the department of education policy studies at Penn State. He also has a faculty appointment with the Penn State Dickinson School of Law. Mr. Green has written three books and nearly 50 articles and book chapters pertaining to educational law. He helped to create Penn State’s joint degree program in law and education and he runs the Penn State University Law and Education Institute, which teaches nearly 100 administrators, educators and attorneys annually.
Steven Broadbent (Engr ’76 CM)
Steven W. Broadbent (Engr ’76 L/M) is the Republican candidate for chairman of the Fulton County board of commissioners in Georgia. The election will be held in November.

Rebecca Green (Nurs ’08)
Rebecca Green (Nurs ’08) and Elliott Garber (Col ’03) were married on Jan. 30, 2010, and reside in Washington, D.C. Ms. Garber is an intensive care registered nurse at the Specialty Hospital of Washington. Mr. Garber is a veterinarian and U.S. Army Captain currently serving a one year assignment in support of the Multinational Forces and Observers mission in the Sinai desert, Egypt.
Andrew Girvin (Engr ’94 CM)
Andrew M. Girvin (Engr ’94 L/M) and his wife, Jerri, welcomed their son, William Bain, on March 25, 2010. He joins sisters, Mallory, 10; and Karson Ann , 8, and brother, Drew, 6. The family resides in Madison, N.J.
Karen O’Toole (Col ’98)
Karen Stenson O’Toole (Col ’98 A/M) and her husband, Kevin, welcomed a daughter, Mary Elaine, on April 23, 2010. Lainey joins brothers Liam and Colin. The family lives in Atlanta.
Ellsworth Johnson (Col ’92)
Ellsworth K. “Kenny” Johnson III (Col ’92 L/M) and his wife, Terri, welcomed their second child, Zachary Evan, on Jan. 13, 2010. Zachary joins brother, Nicholas Ryan, 7. Mr. Johnson was also promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army on Nov. 1, 2009. He currently serves as the U.S. Army Acquisition Support Center’s Functional Area 51C (Contracting) Prepotency Officer. The family resides in Fort Belvoir, Va.

Erik Haglund (Engr ’04 L/M) and Erin Shook Haglund (Col ’03 L/M) are proud to announce the birth of their first child, James Evan, born on Feb. 8, 2010.

Luis Calderon (Engr ’00)
Luis Calderon (Engr ’00) and Jacqueline Brown (Col ’01) were married on Dec. 22, 2009, in Rincon, Puerto Rico. The couple resides in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Molley Clarkson (Col ’00 CM)
Molley Jesse Clarkson (Col ’00 L/M) and her husband, Edward Clarkson, welcomed their second child and first son, Andrew Marion, on March 9, 2010. Andrew joins sister, Libby, 2. The family lives in Atlanta.
William Almond (Com ’89 CM)
William A. Almond III (Com ’89 L/M) is senior vice president of commercial banking at MB Financial Bank. Mr. Almond has 18 years of commercial banking experience and joined MB from First Chicago Bank & Trust, where he spent the past four years as senior vice president, division manager of commercial and industrial banking.
Julie Dudley (Col ’82 CM)
Julie Dudley (Col ’82 L/M) left her job as an assistant United States attorney for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Western District of Virginia, on May 21, 2010, to become the clerk of court for the Western District of Virginia. She has worked as an AUSA since October, 1988—nearly 22 years. While with the U.S. attorney’s office, she litigated both civil and criminal cases and served as the United States Attorney from May 17, 2008, until October 15, 2009. Over the course of her tenure, she also served as a branch office manager, chief of the civil division and first assistant U.S. attorney.

Bob Understein (Com ’63 CM)
Bob Understein (Com ’63 L/M) is president of the Nevada chapter of Financial Executives International, an association for chief financial officers and other senior finance executives throughout the U.S. and Canada, whose members consist of most of the Fortune 500 companies. Founded in 1931, FEI’s mission is to advance the success of senior-level financial executives, their organizations and the profession, and consists of over 12,000 members. In April, Mr. Understein was the national chair for the FEI Annual Summit held in Las Vegas. Mr. Understein serves on the advisory board of the McIntire School of Commerce and previously served on the U.Va. Alumni Board of Managers, where he was the national chairman for the Jefferson Scholars Program from 1986-88.
Christy Houston (Col ’06, Educ ’09 CM)
Christy MacDowell Houston (Col ’06, Educ ’09 L/M) and Kenneth Paul Anderson were married on April 10, 2010, at Grace Church of Georgetown in Washington, D.C. The couple resides in Washington, D.C., where Ms. Anderson is a program manager for the master of professional studies in real estate program at Georgetown University and Mr. Anderson is a Consultant with Concentrance Consulting Group.
Jennifer Hodge (Col ’91 CM)
Jennifer Taylor Hodge (Col ’91 L/M) wrote a nonfiction piece, Mother Dearly Loved Flowers, which was published in April in the Smithfield Review, a journal of history west of the Blue Ridge. Ms. Hodge adapted the piece from her 2009 master’s thesis from Hollins University about the women involved in the inspiration and creation of the Beale Memorial Garden at Hollins as well as the recent restoration by the Garden Club of Virginia. Ms. Hodge lives in Blacksburg, Va., and is the daughter of H. Robert Taylor (Col ’67 L/M).
Dave Trinkle (Col ’83, Med ’87 CM)
Dave Trinkle (Col ’83, Med ’87 L/M) won re-election as vice-mayor for the City of Roanoke in May and began his four-year term in July. He has served on Roanoke City council, including as vice-mayor, from 2006-2010 and previously on the Roanoke City school board. He is also the associate dean of community and culture with the new Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, opening in August. He and his wife, Ann, have three children: Clay, 17; Ella, 15; and Owen, 10.
Deisy Lemus-Suarez (Col ’02 CM)

Deisy Yamile Lemus-Suarez (Col ’02 L/M) and Gemal Jahi Brangman (Col ’02 L/M) were married in Alexandria, Va., on May 25, 2008, with many U.Va. alumni in attendance. Members of the wedding party included: Candice A. Hassell (Col ’02), Tamara Crawford (Col ’02), Emir Delic (Col ’02) and Lawrence E. Carter (Col ’02). During the ceremony Ms. Hassell recited a poem by Mauwse A. Dogbe (Col ’02). The couple resides in Arlington, Va. Ms. Brangman works in construction management with The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. Mr. Brangman received a master’s degree in international commerce and policy from George Mason University in 2005 and is an international trade analyst for the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Brian Davis (Engr ’99 CM)
Brian T. Davis (Engr ’99 L/M) and his wife, Jill, welcomed their first child, Brayden Thomas, on March 11, 2010. The family resides in Reston, Va.
David Chambers (Col ’85 CM)

David Chambers (Col ’85 L/M) is an executive with Accenture, where he works in proposals and other high-value communications. He also serves on several boards, including the advisory board for U.Va.’s Media Studies Department and the Kennedy Center’s community advisory board and Arts in Crisis program.
Lisa Redding (Col ’92 CM)

Lisa Depew Redding (Col ’92 L/M) and her husband, Jonathan Redding, are celebrating the birth of their first child and daughter, Rebecca Grace, on April 7, 2010. Rebecca is the granddaughter of Ronald Depew (GSBA ’66 A/M). Ms. Redding left her position as an assistant registrar at Georgia Tech to be a full-time mom. The family lives in Atlanta.
William Bartsch (Grad ’59)
William H. Bartsch (Grad ’59) will have his latest book, “Every Day a Nightmare: American Pursuit Pilots in the Defense of Java, 1941-42”, published by Texas A&M University Press in October. He also has a website, www.writingthepacificwar.com, that includes information on his Pacific War books and articles published since 1977. He resides in Reston, Va.
Madeline Kristoff (Col ’08)
Madeline T. Kristoff (Col ’08) is a research assistant for the Security Sector Governance Initiative at the United States Institute of Peace and was awarded a post-graduate Boren Fellowship by the U.S. Department of Defense. The Boren Fellowships are funded by the National Security Education Program, which focuses on geographic areas, languages and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Ms. Kristoff will spend ten months studying Arabic (formal and dialect) at Birzeit University in the West Bank. She will also extend her research on the EU Police Reform Mission in the West Bank and how establishing the Palestinian police influences the creation of a Palestinian state. In addition to working at the USIP for the past two years, Ms. Kristoff pursued a master’s degree from the American University Graduate School in Washington, D.C.
Virginia Gowski (Col ’97)
Virginia “Ginny” Geier Gowski (Col ’97) and her husband, Bill, welcomed their second child, Elizabeth Patricia, on Dec. 8, 2009. Liza joins brother, Freddy, 2. The family resides in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Calvin Sullivan (Col ’03)
Calvin E. F. Sullivan (Col ’03) and Laura M. Sullivan (Col ’05) welcomed their first children, Calvin Edward Fifer Sullivan Jr. and Lillian Marie Sullivan, to the world on Dec. 2, 2009.
David Dahlquist (Engr ’95 CM)
David Dahlquist (Engr ’95 L/M) lives on Long Island, N.Y., with his wife, Stephanie Merton Dahlquist (Educ ’96), and their two daughters. Mr. Dahlquist is vice president and chief financial officer of Park Electochemical Corp., a global advanced materials company. He joined the company in 2006.
Grace Ahn (Col ’01)

Grace Ahn (Col ’01) married Brian Bello (Col ’98) on Dec. 19, 2009, in Taegu, South Korea. Dr. Ahn is the sister of Abraham Ahn (Arch ’00) and Dr. Bello is the brother of Broderick Bello (Col ’90, Med ’94) and Bradford Bello (Arch ’93 L/M). They reside in Chicago.
Mary Stuhldreher (Col ’98)

Mary Rose Emig Stuhldreher (Col ’98) and her husband, Tom, joyfully welcomed their first child, Benjamin Michael, on March 18, 2010. The family resides in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Allison Linney (Col ’95, Darden ’01 CM)
Allison Linney (Col ’95, GSBA ’01 L/M) founded an organizational development consulting firm, Allison Partners, while she was at Darden in 2000. In 2008, she opened an office in downtown Charlottesville.
Lawrence Pilot (Col ’93 CM)
Lawrence Robert Pilot (Col ’93 L/M) and Jamie Swank Pilot welcomed a daughter, Elizabeth Lynne, on Aug. 10, 2009. Elizabeth joins brothers, James, 5; and Brennan, 3. The family resides in Arlington, Va.
William Nachman (Col ’72)
William M. Nachman (Col ’72) has been a reporter at the Gloucester-Mathews Gazette-Journal weekly newspaper for more than 25 years. He has recently been assigned additional duties as a copyeditor. Mr. Nachman has reported professionally for 33 years, having previously worked for weekly newspapers in Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Norfolk, Va., and for a daily newspaper in Savannah, Ga. He resides in York County, Va., with his wife and son.

John Ragosta (Col ’08 CM)

John Ragosta (Law ’84, Grad ’08 L/M) received the Gilder Lehrman Junior Research Fellowship for the 2010-11 academic year at the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello, where he will be working on a second book. His first book, Wellspring of Liberty, was published in the Spring of 2010 by Oxford University Press.

Rachel Talbot (Col ’06)
Rachel Talbot (Col ’06) and Richard Talbot (Col ’07, Educ ’07) were married on June 27, 2009. Ms. Talbot is a registered nurse at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in the surgical intensive care unit. Mr. Talbot is a teacher for Salem City Public Schools. The two currently reside in Roanoke, Va., and are hoping to move to Charlottesville soon.
Jennifer Getz (Col ’97 CM)

Jennifer Regelman Getz (Col ’97 L/M) and her husband, Adam, are proud to announce the birth of their second child, Joshua Benjamin, on Nov. 2, 2009. Joshua joins sister, Rachael, 3. Ms. Getz is a project manager with IBM, where she has worked since graduation. Mr. Getz is the manager of business intelligence with Amtrak. The family resides in Burke, Va.
Ashleigh Hart (Com ’00 CM)
Ashleigh Oakes Hart (Com ’00 L/M) and her husband, Jamie, welcomed their first child, Sadie Mary Hart, on March 9, 2010. Ms. Hart is a managing director at JPMorgan. The Hart family lives in New York City.

Jonathan Brandon (Col ’02, Med ’06)
Jonathan Lightfoot Brandon (Col ’02, Med ’06) and Amy Caruso Brown (Col ’02 L/M) celebrated the second birthday of Jon’s daughter, Grace Hart Brandon, on Feb. 22, 2010. The couple resides in Denver, Colo., where they are both completing medical residency training. They have both accepted fellowships at The Children’s Hospital in Denver, which will begin July 2011. Ms. Brown will be a fellow in pediatric hematology/oncology and Mr. Brandon will be in a fellow in pediatric radiology.

Sarah Dunn (Col ’04 CM)
Sarah Dunn (Col ’04 L/M) and Justin Davis were married on Sept. 5, 2009, in Duxbury, Mass. Ms. Davis is the daughter of Dan T. Dunn (GSBA ’71, ’76). She is a postdoctoral research scholar in Columbia Law School’s program in the law and economics of capital markets. This Fall, she will join Cravath, Swaine & Moore as an associate. Mr. Davis is an assistant professor in the department of humanities at the City University of New York, New York City College of Technology, in Brooklyn. The couple resides in New York City.
William Musser (Col ’95 CM)
William M. Musser IV (Col ’95 L/M) and his wife, Jennifer E. McClister (Col ’95 L/M), welcomed their first child and son, Henry Patrick Musser, on April 11, 2010. The family resides in Golden, Colo.
Jennifer Wieland (Col ’97, Law ’02 CM)

Jennifer Bowen Wieland (Col ’97, Law ’02 L/M) and her husband, Jeff Wieland, welcomed Zachary Cyrus on April 7, 2010. Zach joins brother, Ben, and sister, Maggie. The family resides in Shawnee, Kan. Ms. Wieland is a litigator practicing with the firm of Berkowitz Oliver in Kansas City, Miss. Mr. Wieland is a social studies teacher at Mill Valley High School, where he was recently named the De Soto School District’s Secondary Teacher of the Year.

Marissa Heigle (Col ’07)
Marissa Heigle (Col ’07) and Jerome Moore (Engr ’07) were married on May 29, 2010, at the Dallas Arboretum. The couple resides in Dallas, where Ms. Moore is pursuing her teaching certification for elementary and special education and Mr. Moore is an electrical engineer for Raytheon. Many of their fellow graduates of the University traveled to Dallas to attend the ceremony.

Jen Andrews Dudderar (Col ’99 L/M) and her husband, Jason Bailey Dudderar, welcomed their beautiful daughter, Caroline Claire, on Sept. 14, 2009.
Daniel Van Orman (Col ’03)

Daniel Jacob Van Orman (Col ’03) and Sarah Bell Van Orman (Educ ’04) welcomed their first child, William Joseph, on May 7, 2010. The family resides in Portsmouth, Va.
James Phillips (Col ’82)
James Phillips (Col ’82) was elected to the board of trustees of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Jackson, Miss., where he graduated in 1977 and was recognized as a distinguished alumnus in 2004. Dr. Phillips practices emergency medicine, anesthesiology and pediatric intensive care at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He previously served as director of the Anesthesia Pain Clinic at the Mayo Clinic. For the past 28 years, Colonel Phillips has been in the U.S. Army with a variety of active and reserve assignments. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service as a battalion commander in the 20th Special Forces Group during their tour in Afghanistan and later served with the 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq. He just finished serving as the Mississippi State Surgeon. He is married to Alison Whitman Phillips (College ’82).
Kelly McMunigal (Col ’08)

Kelly McMunigal (Col ’08) and Andrew Atkinson (Col ’08) were married in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. They met while students together in U.S. Air Force ROTC at U.Va. They are both serving as officers in the Air Force and are stationed together in Florida. Ms. Atkinson is an intelligence officer and Mr. Atkinson is a test engineer.
