Donald Hannah (Col ’55 CM)
Donald Hannah (Col ’55 CM) has been appointed co-chairman of the International Beach Polo Association. The group organizes and conducts beach polo games around the world. Mr. Hannah founded the University’s polo club in 1953 and has been nominated for the United States Polo Hall of Fame. He is the chairman emeritus of the Semester at Sea program and was responsible for the program’s association with U.Va. in 2004.

Henry Frey (Engr ’85)
H. Christopher Frey was appointed by the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to a two year term as Chair of the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee. CASAC advises the Administrator on the National Ambient Air Quality Standards. He was also appointed to a three year term on the EPA Science Advisory Board.
Rebecca Schneider (Col ’09)
Rebecca Schneider (Col ’09) is chief of staff to Ambassador Kurt Volker at the McCain Institute for International Leadership at Arizona State University, a center for research and action in national security and foreign policy based in Washington, D.C. She helped Ambassador Volker launch the nonprofit institute in early 2012. Ms. Schneider holds a Master of Philosophy degree in political science from Oxford University.

Linda Fisher Thornton (Col ’83 CM)
Linda Fisher Thornton (Col ’83 CM) has been named one of the top 100 thought leaders in trustworthy business behavior by Trust Across America. She is the CEO of Leading in Context, a leadership development firm in Richmond, Va. The Human Factor, a human resources magazine based in India, published her interview about trends in ethical leadership in its January 2013 issue.
Christinia Gallman (Col ’01 CM)
Christinia Gallman (Col ’01 CM) married Asher Kemp Jr. in September 2012. Ms. Kemp is a clinical psychologist in Pennsylvania.

Susan Goewey (Com ’81 CM)
Susan Goewey (Com ’81 CM) is the editor of AGB Press at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges in Washington, D.C. She recently worked with former University president and professor of law emeritus Robert M. O’Neil on his latest book, Updating Board Bylaws: A Guide for Colleges and Universities, published by AGB Press in December 2012.

Kira Fonteneau (Col ’98 CM)
Kira Fonteneau (Col ’98 CM) was appointed the first public defender of Jefferson County, Alabama. Ms. Fonteneau will establish the office and later manage its day-to-day operations.
Allison Bolyard (Com ’98 CM)

Allison Bolyard (Com ’98 CM) and her husband, Andrew, welcomed a son, Alexander Spencer, on April 1, 2012. Alexander joins a big brother, Anderson. The family recently relocated from Boston to Richmond, Va., where Allison is vice president of brand marketing for the Baby Jogger Co.
Donald Lewis (Col ’89 CM)

Donald Lewis (Col ’89 CM) received recognition from the U.S. News & World Report as one of its “Top Doctors” for orthopedic hand surgery. He is currently practicing orthopedic sports medicine and hand surgery in Walnut Creek, Calif. Dr. Lewis is married with two children, Vienna, 5, and Reid, 3. He enjoys skiing, triathlons and fly fishing.
Richard Yates (Col ’73, Educ ’75 CM)
Richard Yates (Col ’73, Educ ’75 CM) retired in 2009 after a 34-year career as a high school guidance counselor. Elected to the Colonial Heights, Va., school board in 2010, he served as the board’s vice chair in 2011 and became its chairman in January 2013. Mr. Yates has been a member of the board of directors of the Southside Health Education Foundation since 2009 and currently serves as its vice chair.
Leslie McMurray (Col ’01 CM)

Leslie McMurray (Col ’01 CM) and her husband, Geoff, welcomed their second daughter, Virginia Grace, on Nov. 17, 2012. She joins big sister Charlotte Elizabeth. Virginia and Charlotte are the nieces of Ashley Fitzgerald Hall (Nurs ’99). The McMurrays live in Okinawa, Japan, where Dr. Leslie McMurray is an endodontist with the U.S. Navy.

D.J. Gelner (Law ’08)
D.J. Gelner (Law ’08) published his first novel, Jesus Was a Time Traveler, in Dec. 2012 and is currently putting the finishing touches on his Debt of Souls trilogy, to be published in the first half of 2013. Mr. Gelner lives in St. Louis.

Valerie Wilder (Col ’11)
Valerie Wilder (Col ’11) married Robert Mosolgo on Dec. 15, 2012, in Charlottesville.
Joseph Brown (Col ’64 CM)
Joseph Brown (Col ’64 CM) was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, on Dec. 18, 2012, for decades of service to UNLV and the Las Vegas community. In July 2012, Mr. Brown merged his law firm of Jones Vargas, where he has served as president for many years, into the Arizona-based firm of Fennemore Craig. The firm is now known in Nevada as Fennemore Craig Jones Vargas.

Elizabeth Horahan (Engr ’06 CM)
Elizabeth Horahan (Engr ’06 CM) married Stephen Guenther on Sept. 1, 2012, in Philadelphia. The couple resides in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania, where Ms. Guenther is a material handling engineer at Mack Trucks. The wedding party included Laura Wagner (Col ’07) and Whitfield Saliba (Com ’06 L/M).
Randolph Sergent (Engr ’89, Law ’95 CM)
Randolph Sergent (Engr ’89, Law ’95 CM) is vice president and deputy general counsel of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, located in Baltimore.
G. Farmer (Col ’58, Grad ’60 CM)
G. Farmer (Col ’58, Grad ’60 CM) published a book, Climate Change Science: A Modern Synthesis, with Springer Publishers. The book is aimed at first-year college students as an introduction to climate change science.
Steve Shepard (Col ’89, Grad ’90 CM)
Steve Shepard (Col ’89, Grad ’90 CM) is currently the commanding officer of the Navy Element and director of the Joint Military Intelligence Training Center at the Defense Intelligence Agency. He assumed command following deployment on the USS Enterprise in 2011. While on the Enterprise, he supported Operation Enduring Freedom and multiple counterpiracy operations.
Brooke Brower (Col ’00 CM)
Brooke Brower (Col ’00 CM) and his wife, Kate, welcomed their first child, Graham Andersen, on Oct. 11, 2012. The family resides in Washington, D.C., where Mr. Brower is the executive producer of MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown and teaches political reporting at Georgetown University.
Ann Pulliam (Com ’88, Grad ’91 CM)
Ann Pulliam (Com ’88, Grad ’91 CM) is a hospital chaplain at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. She completed her training at Georgetown University Hospital and is a candidate for a master’s degree in pastoral theology from Saint Joseph’s College in Maine. Ms. Pulliam is also a spokesperson for the Colorectal Cancer Coalition and advocates for the early detection of colon cancer. She lives with her husband, Joel Pulliam (Darden ’91 L/M); and their three children in McLean, Va.
