Amanda Smith (Col ’10)

Job announcement on August 19, 2024

Amanda Smith (Col ’10) has joined the health care practice of law firm K&L Gates LLP as counsel in its Washington, D.C. office. She joins the firm from 340B Health, a nonprofit organization comprising more than 1,500 hospitals and health systems participating in the federal 340B drug pricing program.

Smith has advised on regulatory, legislative, and legal matters related to the 340B program. She has worked directly with member hospitals on 340B compliance and policy issues, prepared legal analyses and advocacy documents on various 340B issues, and has played a key role in the development of state level policy and advocacy resources. Prior to her role at 340B Health, Smith served as a health care law clerk for the United States Senate Committee on Finance.

Jonathan McCullers (Col ’89 CM)

Dr. Jon McCullers (Col ’89 CM) has been named dean of the College of Medicine and vice president of health affairs at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. He previously served 13 years as chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

Brian Cafferty (Grad ’90)

Brian G. Cafferty (Grad ’90) has joined the boutique law firm GoldMark Partners LLP as a partner. Cafferty brings an extensive background in real estate, corporate governance, and finance to the firm, which is located in Needham, Massachusetts and is focused on commercial real estate and corporate law. His expertise spans corporate creation, governance, acquisitions, zoning, commercial leasing, and environmental compliance. He has successfully represented clients in various courts and provided strategic counsel on operational and compliance matters. He has handled the development, financing, and leasing of industrial, suburban office, retail, and multi-family projects, including brownfield sites. Cafferty is also experienced with Chapter 91 filled tidelands and Chapter 21E hazardous waste sites.

 

Before joining GoldMark, Cafferty served as vice president of legal affairs at Combined Properties, a full-service real estate investment and development firm, specializing in the development and acquisition of high-quality office, residential, industrial, and retail properties in the Boston area. Cafferty received his J.D. from Boston College School of Law.

Jason Nadolinski (SCPS ’22 CM)

Job announcement on August 12, 2024

Jason S. Nadolinski (SCPS ’22 CM) has been selected to serve as the director of the student affairs division of the Military and Veterans Student Success Center at Florida Atlantic University.

In this role, he will lead a professional staff dedicated to serving and supporting over 1,700 military and veteran students, their dependents, and the U.S. Army ROTC battalion at six campus locations across south Florida. He will create and sustain meaningful education pathways and a sense of special membership for the entire service member community across FAU, which has earned the Military Friendly School designation for twelve straight years and the Military Spouse Friendly School recognition for 2022-2023.

Nadolinski accepted this position upon retirement as a senior special agent/ team leader with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, where he served from 2001-2023. He also retired from the U.S. Navy as a master chief petty officer after combined active duty and reserve component service of over 26-years. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Naval War College – Senior Enlisted Academy.

He was a member of the second group of public safety leaders to earn the UVA Master of Public Safety degree and credential in 2022.

Kim Bridges (Col ’87 CM)

Kim Bridges (Col ’87 CM) has been promoted to associate professor in the School of Education at Virginia Commonwealth University. She joined the Department of Educational Leadership in 2018 after earning a doctorate in education leadership (Ed.L.D) from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She directs the Ed.D. capstone experience, a year-long collaboration with graduate student teams and partner organizations. Her scholarship and facilitation work focus on local governance and state policy for sustainable K-12 improvement.

Karl Frisch (SCPS ’23 CM)

Karl Frisch (SCPS ’23 CM) was re-elected as chair of the Fairfax County (VA) School Board on July 11, 2024. With a $3.5 billion budget, 200 schools, 183,000 students, and 27,000 employees, Fairfax County Public Schools is Virginia’s largest and America’s ninth-largest public school system.

Frisch was elected in 2019 to represent Providence District on the school board, garnering more votes than any candidate for that office in the district’s history. In 2023, he was re-elected by a wider margin. He is the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected to local office in Virginia’s largest county.

Before joining the school board, Frisch was a nonprofit executive and public policy specialist. In addition to his work on the board, he serves on the board of directors for the University of Virginia Queer Alumni Network (QVA).

Michele Walsh (Col ’92 CM)

Job announcement on April 24, 2024

Michele Bresnick Walsh (Col ’92 CM) has been elected as chair and CEO of the law firm Gordon Feinblatt LLC, effective July 31, 2024.

Walsh is the first woman to occupy this role in the firm’s 71-year history. She began as an Associate at Gordon Feinblatt in 1997, as a business and securities lawyer. Over time, she has become an integral member of many of the firm’s practice groups, including forming the EMERGE practice group for emerging businesses. She currently chairs the firm’s Business and Securities practice groups, serves on the firm’s Executive Committee, and chairs the firm’s Finance Committee and Talent Acquisition Committee.

Walsh is also a tireless advocate in the community where she is involved in the leadership of many philanthropic organizations, including There Goes My Hero Foundation, Lawyers’ Campaign Against Hunger, Executive Alliance and many others. She relates to those looking to “seize the day,” and has done just that in her professional and personal life.

Ben Arthur (Col ’95) is launching the sixth season of his podcast, SongWriter, in which an author reads a song and a songwriter performs a song written in response. Past seasons have featured artists such as Questlove, Susan Orlean, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Roxane Gay, Joyce Carol Oates, Steve Earle, and others. Steven Fox (Engr ’81 CM) is co-founder and Luke Fox (Engr ’15 CM) manager of eViation and Drone Academy, which provides classroom, flight training, and hands-on experience focused on the emerging Unmanned Aviation Systems and electric “green technologies” aviation markets. Opened in January 2024, the Academy is located at Hampton Roads Executive Airport in Chesapeake, Virginia. Its mission is to prepare students for the FAA Part 107 UAS Operator examination and to also provide specialized drone training for select use cases.

The Academy has agreements in place with Old Dominion University, NASA, the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, Virginia Tech, Hampton University,  Community College Workforce Alliance, school divisions in Virginia Beach and York County, Virginia, and New Horizons Regional Education Centers.

Paul Alp (Arch ’91) has joined the law firm of Adams and Reese, where he serves as one of the co-leaders of the new Adams and Reese Aviation and Aerospace Team.

Jim Roche (Darden ’06 CM) has been named president, BRP and CEO, Underwriting, Capacity, & Technology Operations at Baldwin Risk Partners, one of the largest insurance brokers in the United States.  

Roche has been at BRP since 2019, when he joined as part of the acquisition of Millennial Specialty Insurance (MSI), a firm which he founded in 2015.

Joe Averbach (Col ’09)

Ron Poff (SCPS ’14 CM) has been named the assistant department head in the Department of Management at Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business. He was promoted to associate professor of practice and assumed the new administrative role in July. Ron has over 30 years of new product development and international business development experience including global marketing, purchasing and operations management skills. Before joining Virginia Tech in August 2019, he served as industry director and director of global marketing for Mar-Bal, Inc., the leading integrated compounder and molder of thermoset composites.

Ron holds an M.S. in Marketing from Southern New Hampshire University and a B.S. in Business Management from University of Phoenix. A veteran of the US Navy and Reserves (1989-1999), he lives in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Rex Young (Col ’12 CM)

An inspirational and values-driven administrator with a track record for building innovation through inclusive excellence, a dedicated teacher and mentor, and internationally recognized scholar of nineteenth-century French fiction and life writing, President McCall is the second woman to lead Wooster since its founding in 1866. She also is a tenured professor in the Department of French and Francophone Studies.

McCall previously was provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Xavier University of Louisiana—ranked fifth among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the U.S. according to U.S. News & World Report and first among all institutions for the number of African American graduates completing medical school and multiple Ph.D. programs.

Tara Wheeler Prather (COM ’90 CM) has started a new position as the alumnae engagement manager for Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity, Inc. Based in Indianapolis, Alpha Gamma Delta is an international women’s fraternity and is part of the National Panhellenic Conference.  Prather works from her home in Valrico, Florida where she lives with her husband and son.

Daisy Stevens Rojas (Col ’09, Educ ’15) recently accepted a role at Charlottesville-based, Platt Financial, as a financial services professional. She works collaboratively with individual and corporate clients to create financial strategies bridging generational, cultural and professional challenges. Rojas also develops the branding and marketing strategies of the firm’s related content, research and initiatives. Before moving into this role, Rojas was vice president at a multi-state contracting firm managing contracts in locations such as the Homestead and Greenbrier resorts and other private communities in Central Virginia, West Virginia and the Washington, D.C. and Maryland areas. Before that, Rojas worked in philanthropic pursuits garnering more than $20 million in support for the University of Virginia, education initiatives and various community service organizations. She also served as president of the Albemarle County Rotary Club during the 2022-2023 fiscal year and has over 20 years of financial services experience. Devon Knudsen (Col ’05)

Devon Knudsen (Col ’05) is concluding a two-year secretariat position coordinating the U.S. government’s atrocity prevention efforts. She also led the multilateral atrocity prevention efforts of a group started by Samantha Power, who she first heard speak at UVA. Knudsen is grateful to have been entrusted with this responsibility and for the widespread support she received in this role.
