Jan Mason (Grad ’05)
Jan Mason (Grad ’05) and her husband, Daniel, along with their first child, Djuna Lani, born Aug 22, 2005, welcomed twins, Annabelle and Paul, born Oct. 10, 2009. Ms. Mason teaches drama courses at the college level. The family resides in Kingston, N.Y., where Mr. Mason is studying for a master’s degree in curatorial studies at Bard College. Mr. Mason is son of William Noyes Mason III (Col ’64 L/M) and Rev. Dr. Mary Barr Mason (Nurs ’59 L/M).
Duggan. Edwards (Col ’01)

Sayward Edwards Duggan (Col ’01 A/M) and her husband, Andrew Duggan, announce the birth of their son, John “Jack” Edwards, born on Dec. 3, 2009, at MCV/VCU Hospitals in Richmond, Va. Dr. Sayward Duggan is a second year resident at VCU School of Dentistry. She is pursuing a master’s of science in dentistry degree and a certificate in periodontics after completing a two year general practice residency at U.Va. Health System. The family resides in Richmond.
Kelly Whitehead (Col ’96 CM)
Kelly Oakes Whitehead (Col ’96 L/M) and her husband, Chris, welcomed their second daughter, Elizabeth Garland Oakes Whitehead, on July 13, 2009. She joins her sister, Cate. The family resides outside of Philadelphia in Wallingford, Pa.
Jennifer Sadler (Col ’96 CM)
Jennifer L. Sadler (Col ’96 L/M) married Tony Daniel in Atlanta on April 25, 2009. Ms. Sadler is a marketing communications consultant in Atlanta. Mr. Daniel is a partner with an investment consulting firm, LCG Associates. Ms. Sadler is the daughter of Alexander B. Sadler Jr. (Engr ’58 L/M) and the sister of Brian G. Sadler (Com ’87 L/M) and Bruce K. Sadler (Engr ’88 L/M).
Brian Sadler (Com ’87 CM)
Brian G. Sadler (Com ’87 L/M) is the vice president and chief financial officer of Chamberlin Edmonds & Associates in Atlanta. In June, he was named the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s “CFO of the Year” for the medium-sized private companies category. Mr. Sadler lives in Atlanta with his wife, Karla. He is the son of Alexander B. Sadler Jr. (Engr ’58 L/M) of Richmond, Va., and the brother of Bruce K. Sadler (Engr ’88 L/M) of Richmond, Va. and Jennifer Sadler Daniel (Col ’96 L/M) of Atlanta.
John Kowalski (Col ’77, Med ’81 CM)
John P. Kowalski (Col ’77, Med ’81 L/M) is clinical professor of family medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has precepted first, second and third year VCU medical students in his private practice. Dr. Kowalski is the vice president of Chickahominy Family Practice in the Richmond, Va., area, where he has worked for the last 25 years.

Mildred Baltz (Educ ’32)
Mildred “Neale” Baltz (Educ ’32) celebrated her 100th birthday on Oct. 23, 2009, with 150 family members and friends. After receiving a master’s degree from Columbia University, Ms. Baltz was a reading consultant with Macmillan Publishing from 1936-1946, lecturing across 32 states. In 1946-1947, she supervised the Berlin school for children of U.S. Army personnel. She married Richard Baltz in 1947. Ms. Baltz lives in her Hagerstown, Md., home of 45 years and was an avid golfer until this year. She is a founding member of the Beta Alpha chapter of Kappa Delta at University of Virginia and has one daughter, Mary Baltz Curran (Engr ’80 L/M), who is also a Beta Alpha Kappa Delta.
David Melon (Col ’03 CM)

David Melon (Col ’03 L/M) and Jennifer Sage Melon (Col ’03 L/M) welcomed their first child, Ethan Grant, born Dec. 11, 2009. The Melon family resides in Columbus, Ohio, where Ms. Melon is a pediatric nurse and Dr. David Melon is a resident in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.
Clayman Edwards (Com ’87, Grad ’88)
Clayman B. Edwards (Com ’87, Grad ’88) is president of Hohner Inc., a global manufacturer and distributor of musical instruments and the world’s largest manufacturer of Harmonicas. Mr. Edwards is a Paul Harris Fellow and serves on the board of directors of the Western Henrico Rotary Club in Richmond, Va.
Thomas Armstrong (Grad ’74 CM)
Thomas Armstrong (Grad ’74 L/M) is commissioner and deputy director for the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s Commission for Academic Accreditation in the United Arab Emirates. He will be based in Abu Dhabi. He formerly served as vice chancellor for academic and student affairs and as professor of history at LSU Alexandria.
Jeffrey Richman (Com ’99 CM)

Jeffrey Richman (Com ’99 L/M) and his wife, Mary McCann Richman (Com ’00 L/M), welcomed their second child, Patrick Daniel, on Aug. 31, 2009. He joins older sister, Noa, who will turn 2 in February. The family resides in Boston.
Elizabeth McColl (Col ’83 CM)

Elizabeth McColl (Col ’83 L/M) is publishing a novel, Opening Arteries, in April. The book attempts to mollify the chaos of five primary characters that undergo varying blood ruptures. Although the book is pure fiction, Ms. McColl personally experienced a head injury in 1986 after graduating from Duke Law and a wedding.
Jack Jefferies (Com ’49, Law ’51 CM)
Jack P. Jefferies (Com ’49, Law ’51 L/M) and Banks Brown (Law ’77) published the fifth edition of Understanding Hospitality Law, a basic textbook for the hotel industry.
Carolyn Braudaway (Nurs ’66)
Carolyn Krauch Braudaway (Nurs ’66) retired from the Washington Adventist University Department of Nursing after a 33-year career, culminating as as a baccalaureate nurse educator in psychiatric nursing and community health nursing. During her tenure at WAU, Mr. Braudaway received the Zapara Award for Excellence in Teaching and a Lifetime Achievement Award. She received a master’s degree in nursing from California State University in psychiatric nursing and nursing education in 1976 and had previously retired as a colonel from the U.S. Army Nurse Corps Reserves after serving 30 active duty and reserve years as a military nurse. She started as a U.S. Navy nurse during the Vietnam War era. Her awards included a Meritorious Service Medal for 30 years as an outstanding military nurse and leader and for excellence during the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm.
Will Trinkle (Col ’80 CM)
Will Trinkle (Col ’80 L/M) was named a board member of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the nation’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender media advocacy and anti-defamation organization, in March. Mr. Trinkle is chief executive officer of C.W. Francis and Son, a real estate development and management firm specializing in industrial, commercial and residential projects. He is a member of the Empire State Pride Agenda political board and has served as co-chair of their foundation board. He is also on the board of trustees at Hollins University and is a commissioner on the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Mr. Trinkle resides with his partner in New York City and Roanoke, Va.
Ron Friedman (Col ’80)
Ron Friedman (Col ’80 A/M) served as a federal prosecutor in Seattle for 20 years, receiving numerous awards from the U.S. Department of Justice. He left government service and is now a partner at the Seattle law firm of Lane, Powell, where he will be concentrating on criminal defense, health care and regulatory compliance matters.
Ben Lopatin (Col ’04 CM)
Ben Lopatin (Col ’04 L/M), Erin Lancione (Com ’04) and Jonathan Cobey Potter (Col ’04 L/M) started Wellfire Interactive, LLC, a media design and web development firm based in Arlington, Va. They launched successful projects for data security consulting firm infoLock Technologies and the non-profit advocacy organization FairVote.
Dave MacPhail (Arch ’98 CM)

Dave MacPhail (Arch ’98 L/M) and his wife, Angela, welcomed their first child, Anneliese Rose, on Aug. 13, 2009. They reside in Charlottesville.
J. Kelly (Col ’72 CM)
J. Fredrick Kelly Jr. (Col ’72 L/M) retired after a 32-year career with Aeroglide Corp. in Raleigh, N.C. He was president for the last 17 years. Aeroglide designed and built industrial driers used in the food, feed, and industrial markets. Mr. Kelly stepped down with the sale of his company to the Buhler Group, a Swiss-based industrial conglomerate. He remains active in civic endeavors and is searching for a “second phase” career.
Ravi Shankar (Col ’96 CM)
Ravi Shankar (Col ’96 L/M) and Diane Creede (Col ’96 L/M) welcomed their second daughter, Talia Parvathi Shankar, on Nov. 18,2009. Talia joins her sister, Samara, and the family resides in Chester, Conn. Mr. Shankar teaches at Central Connecticut State University and Ms. Creede is employed at Connecticut College. The family will be traveling to Cypress early next year, where Mr. Shankar will be teaching for the semester. Talia is the niece of Rahini Shankar (Col ’07).
Corry Andrews (Col ’91, Educ ’12, Law ’96)

Corry Catherine Andrews (Col ’91, Law ’96, Educ ’12) and Barton William Biggs (Col ’90) welcomed a son, Ezra William Biggs, on May 19, 2009, at home in Nelson County, Va. Ezra joins sisters: Ailey, 6; Harper, 3; and Marley, 3.
Thomas Neale (Col ’74 CM)

Thomas M. Neale (Col ’74 L/M) is a managing director for Patriot Capital, a $180 million SBIC debenture fund based in Baltimore. The company invests subordinated debt and equity in privately held, middle market companies to facilitate acquisitions, management buyouts and growth.
Lauren Cardwell (Col ’02)

Lauren Rooker Cardwell (Col ’02) and Hank Cardwell (Col ’03, Educ ’03) joyfully announce the birth of their second child, Lem Thompson. Lem was born at home on Aug. 11, 2009. His big sister, Lottie May, is joyfully embracing her new role. The family continues to reside in Nashville, Tenn., and welcomes visits from fellow alumni.
Jasmine Ratliff (Col ’99 CM)

Jasmine Hall Ratliff (Col ’99 L/M) and Geoff Ratliff (Col ’00 L/M) welcomed their first child, Beverly Louisa, on Oct. 31, 2009. Ms. Ratliff is a program officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Mr. Ratliff is a manager in housing and community development at the National Urban League. The family lives in Edison, N.J.
Elizabeth Clark (Col ’99)
Elizabeth Clark (Col ’99) married Robert Paul Anderson on Aug. 1, 2009, in Washington, D.C. The couple resides in Annapolis, Md.

Hayden Saunier (Col ’79 CM)
Hayden Saunier (Col ’79 L/M) published a collection of poems, Tips for Domestic Travel, with Black Lawrence Press in September. The book was a finalist for the St. Lawrence Book Award . Her poetry has appeared in 5 A.M., Mad Poets Review, Margie, Nimrod, Philadelphia Stories and Rattle, among others. Ms. Saunier received the 2005 Robert Fraser Poetry Award and was a finalist for the 2007 Liam Rector First Book Prize selected by David Wojahn. An actress and voice-over artist, her film and television credits include The Sixth Sense, Philadelphia Diary and Hack.

Winifred Phillips (Engr ’66, Engr ’68 CM)
Winifred M. Phillips (Engr ’66, ’68 L/M) is vice president for research, director and professor of mechanical engineering, and Don and Ruth Eckis professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Florida at Gainesville. He received an honorary membership in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in recognition of his contributions to mechanical engineering and engineering education through service and leadership in organizations including ASME, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, the American Society for Engineering Education, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering. Since 1988, Mr. Phillips has been on the faculty at the University of Florida, Gainesville, serving as professor of mechanical engineering, research professor of biomedical engineering (1988-99), associate vice president for engineering and industrial experiment station (1990-99) at the College of Engineering and dean of the Graduate School (1999-2004). He previously was head of the School of Mechanical Engineering at Perdue University from 1980 to 1988. He also held positions at Pennsylvania State University, University Park, the University of Paris and U.Va. Mr. Phillips has taught a wide range of fluid mechanics course related to aerodynamics and biological fluid flow. His teaching and research contributions to fluid mechanics in living systems helped pave the way for biomedical engineering to be a highly respected activity within mechanical engineering. He has authored and co-authored nearly 200 technical publications and is frequently sought as a seminar speaker and consultant. As an ASME Fellow, he has served the society in many positions, including president, chair of the steering committee for ASME’s Global Summit on the Future of Mechanical Engineering, trustee of the ASME Foundation. Mr. Phillips is a fellow of nine other societies, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Astronautical Society, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the American Society for Engineering Education, the Biomedical Engineering Society and the New York Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society for Arts (UK) among many others.

Anthony Holbrook (Com ’01) and Becky Brocato Holbrook (Nurs ’05) are proud to announce the birth of their second child, Claire Elizabeth, on Oct. 28, 2009. Claire joins her brother, Benjamin Thomas, born on Sept. 24, 2007. The family resides in Chantilly, Va.
Dustin Kidd (Grad ’99, Grad ’04)

Dustin Kidd (Grad ’99, ’04) published his first book, Legislating Creativity: The Intersection of Art and Politics, with Routledge in December. He is an assistant professor of sociology at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Sarah Smith (Col ’02 CM)
Sarah Rucker Smith (Col ’02 L/M) and Brandon K. Smith (Com ’01 L/M) welcomed their first child, Lila Ann, on Oct. 10, 2009, one day after Mr. Smith completed his M.B.A. degree at Duke University.

Hunter Ruch (Arch ’99 CM)
Hunter Ruch (Arch ’99 L/M) and Blaire Dennier Ruch (Col ’99) welcomed their third child, Everett Hunter, on Oct. 5, 2009. Everett joins sister, Courtlyn Mallory, 4; and brother, Kiefer Alston, 2. Everett is the grandson of Thomas L. Ruch (Col ’68, GSBA ’74 L/M) and the nephew of Courtney D. Queripel (Col ’01). The Ruchs reside in Topeka, Kan., where Mr. Ruch serves on the staff of Topeka Bible Church.

Sarah Barr Johnson (Col ’95) married Andrew Lewis Jones on April 18, 2009, in West Jefferson, N.C. The couple lives in Richmond, Va.
Erika Conly (Engr ’02 CM)
Erika Andrews Conly (Engr ’02 L/M) and her husband, Brian, joyfully announce the birth of their second child, Benjamin David Conly, on Aug. 24, 2009, in Newark, Del. Benjamin joins brother, Wyatt Thomas, 2. The family lives in Kennett Square, Pa. Ms. Conly returns to work in January as a project engineer for Alliant Techsystems (ATK) in Elkton, Md.

John Eversole (Engr ’74 CM)
John F. Eversole III (Engr ’74 L/M) works in the Miami law firm of Mase Lara Eversole and was appointed for a second term as the chairman of the Florida Bar Aviation Law certification committee for 2009-2010. The committee develops and administers the examination for attorneys who have met the requirements to sit for the certification exam in aviation law. Mr. Eversole is board certified in both aviation law and civil trial law in Florida and is a member of the Washington, D.C. bar association.
Renee Rasmussen (Col ’00 CM)
Renee Le Febure Rasmussen (Col ’00 L/M) and Christopher Rasmussen (Col ’97, Grad ‘98) proudly announce the birth of their son, Xavier James, on May 22, 2009. The family resides in Connecticut.
Kimberly Somma (Col ’98)
Kimberly A. Somma (Col ’98) and Jonathan R. Mueller (Col ’98) were married on Oct. 21, 2009. They live in Reno, Nev., where Mr. Mueller started an educational non-profit organization, Sierra Nevada Journeys, and Ms. Somma is completing her master’s in public health degree and runs therapeutic weight loss programs for obese youth and young adults.

Sarah Kelsey Kellermann (Col ’96) and her husband, Tim, welcomed a daughter, Carter Elizabeth, on Nov. 8, 2009. The family lives with their dog, Cooper, in Charlottesville.

Amy Probsdorfer (Col ’97, Arch ’99 L/M) married Michael J. Kelley Jr. on May 16, 2009 in Norfolk, Va. They honeymooned in Maui, Hawaii, and reside in Virginia Beach. Rosemarie Moxley (Arch ’07)

Rosemarie Ravenet Moxley (Arch ’07) and Brian James McReynolds (Engr ’07) were married on Sept. 26, 2009 in West Point, N.Y. Monsignor Brian Donahue, chaplain of the United States Military Academy, officiated the ceremony at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Ms. Moxley received her master’s degree in urban planning from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in June. First Lieutenant McReynolds earned his pilot wings for the U.S. Air Force in early September. The couple resides in San Antonio.
Jennifer Amster (Arch ’88 CM)

Jennifer Amster (Arch ’88 L/M) and her husband, Kevin Tiroly, welcomed their first child and son, Otto Amster Tiroly, on Oct. 2, 2009. The family resides in Chapel Hill, N.C. Ms. Amster is a partner and leads the higher education studio at BJAC, an architecture firm in Raleigh, N.C.

Zohra Saleh (Col ’09) traveled abroad after graduation to visit family and friends in Denmark, England, Germany, Sweden and the United Arab Emirates. She is attending VCU Graduate School in Richmond, Va.

Elizabeth Schick Martin (Com ’95 L/M) and her husband, Will, welcomed their second daughter, Virginia Gray, on Oct. 28, 2009. Virginia joins her sister, Alexandra Jane, 2. The family resides in Herndon, Va.
Kimberly Steger (Arch ’97 CM)
Kimberly Molina Steger (Arch ’97) and Carl Meritt Steger (Col ’95) proudly announce the birth of their daughter, Reagan Meritt. Reagan was born on May 23, 2009. The family resides in Cary, N.C.

Tabitha Brown (Col ’96 CM)
Tabitha R. Brown (Col ’96 L/M) was sworn in as a member of the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court on Oct. 14, 2009. The admission ceremony was held in open court by all nine Justices. Ms. Brown has a solo practice and serves as director at the American Psychological Association. She is a founder of HOPEJUSTICE, an online community of resources for women and young people and is a volunteer attorney with the Maryland Foreclosure Prevention Project. Ms. Brown is admitted to the Maryland Bar, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court. She resides in Upper Marlboro, Md., with her husband and their four children.

Lauren Watts Moore (Col ’03) and Kennard Moore welcomed their first child, Natalie Grace, on June 28, 2009. The family resides in Charlottesville.
Kristin Johnson (Com ’02, Law ’05 CM)
Kristin Braggins Johnson (Com ’02, Law ’05 L/M) and her husband, Joshua C. Johnson (Com ’02, Law ’05 L/M) welcomed their first child, Alexander McDaniel Johnson, on May 4, 2009. He weighed 6 pounds 12 ounces and was 19.75 inches long. The family resides in Roanoke, Va.
