Katherine Bowers (Col ’02, Grad ’04 L/M) received her doctorate in Slavic languages and literatures from Northwestern University in December 2011. She began a research associateship at the University of Cambridge in January.
Carter Bendall (Col ’02 CM)
Carter Heald Bendall (Col ’02 L/M) and her husband, Richard Bendall, welcomed their first child, Emma “Lawson,” on Nov. 1, 2011. The family resides in Lynchburg, Va.
Hannah Pressman (Col ’01 CM)
Hannah Graham Pressman (Col ’01 L/M) and her husband, David, welcomed their second son, Yaniv Shmuel Pressman, on Oct. 25, 2011. Yaniv joins a brother, Idan Ezra, 2. The family resides in Seattle.
Kenny Tucker (Com ’00 CM)
Kenny Tucker (Com ’00 L/M) married Julie Perkins at her parents’ home in Los Altos Hills, Calif., on Aug. 6, 2011. Mr. Tucker is vice president of corporate development at Jive Software and Ms. Perkins recently graduated from business school at Stanford. The couple recently moved to San Francisco.
C. Wilson (Col ’99 CM)
C. Tate Wilson (Col ’99 L/M) and his wife, Karen, welcomed their first child, Ella Claire, on Oct. 21, 2011. The family resides in Arlington, Va. Mr. Wilson is an attorney with the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C. Ella is the granddaughter of Don L. Wilson (Educ ’74 L/M).
Jasmine Ratliff (Col ’99 CM)
Jasmine Hall Ratliff (Col ’99 L/M) was elected to a two-year term on the board of advisors for Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy. Ms. Ratliff is a program officer with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

M. Scott Carty (Arch ’98) and his husband, Neal, welcomed their first child, Evan Elijah, on Nov. 30, 2011. The family resides in Los Angeles.
Susan Sakiyabu (Arch ’97)
Susan Conn Sakiyabu (Arch ’97) and her husband, Duke, welcomed their first child, Fiona Miki, on Oct. 16, 2011. The family resides in Los Angeles, where Ms. Sakiyabu is a project manager with CO Architects.

Brook T. Rolka (Col ’97 L/M) married Christina Leigh O’Loughlin on Aug. 1, 2009, in Bluemont, Va.
Tracy Rohrbaugh (Col ’97, Educ ’97)
Tracy Rohrbaugh (Col ’97, Educ ’97) and her husband, Seth Goldberger, welcomed a son, Sawyer Aaron, on Aug. 12, 2011. Sawyer joins a sister, Madeline Bella, 2. The family resides in New York City, where Ms. Rohrbaugh is an associate director of marketing at Revlon.
Claire Rickards (Col ’97 CM)
Claire Rickards (Col ’97 L/M) received her doctorate degree in industrial/organizational psychology from the University of Connecticut in 2011 and is now the associate director of science for PI Worldwide in Boston. In this role, Ms. Rickards will conduct ongoing validity research and product development to support talent management strategies of client organizations around the world.
Steven Gyory (Com ’97 CM)
Steven Gyory (Com ’97 L/M) and Haley Whitlock Gyory (Col ’98 L/M) welcomed a daughter, Meredith Robin, on Oct. 8, 2011. Meredith joins a brother, Luke Whitlock, age 4. The family resides in Culpeper, Va.

Raj Sharma (Engr ’95, ’97) married Hersha Manani June 4, 2011. The couple resides in Glenside, Pa. Mr. Sharma works at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Region III office in Philadelphia.
Janene Gorham (Col ’93, Educ ’93 CM)
Janene Gorham (Col ’93, Educ ’93 L/M) received the Making IT Happen award for her contributions to the integration of technology in education in K-12 schools. She is the director of the Center for Teacher Leadership, Virginia Beach City Public Schools.

Daniel Santos (Col ’92 L/M) has been elected to the board of governors of the health law section of the Virginia State Bar.
Toni Irving (Col ’92)
Toni Irving (Col ’92) received the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation “Champion for Change” award. The honor recognizes her efforts in juvenile justice reform. Ms. Irving is deputy chief of staff to Illinois governor Pat Quinn. She lives in Chicago.
Roetina Green (Col ’92 CM)
Roetina Smith Green (Col ’92 L/M) married Ronald Ray Green Jr. (Engr ’91, GSBA ’97) in Alexandria, Va., on June 19, 1999. Ms. Green is a professor at Tidewater Community College and Mr. Green is a consultant with Booz, Allen & Hamilton. They have a son, Ronald, 5.
Eugene Cook (Law ’92 CM)
Eugene Cook (Law ’92 L/M) received the George Washington Honor Medal, the highest award given by the Freedom Foundation, at Valley Forge, Pa., on Nov. 12, 2011. Mr. Cooke is a former justice of the Supreme Court of Texas.
Michele Moses (Col ’90 CM)
Michele Moses (Col ’90 L/M) is a professor of educational foundations, policy and practice and associate dean for graduate studies in the School of Education at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She lives in Boulder with her husband and two daughters.

Serita Frey (Col ’88, Grad ’92) is a professor in the department of natural resources and the environment at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. She lives with her husband and daughter on a small farm in Deerfield, N.H.

Ken Jones (Grad ’87 CM)
Ken Jones (Grad ’87 L/M) was elected to the board of directors of the Kentucky Humanities Council. Mr. Jones is serving his eighth year as the Rosenthal Endowed Chair of the department of theatre and dance at Northern Kentucky University.
Michael Huffstetler (Arch ’87)
Michael D. Huffstetler (Arch ’87) is international director of operations for the architecture firm of Leo A Daly. He has served as the operations director of the firm’s Miami office and most recently as a senior project manager and team operations lead in the company’s Omaha, Neb., office. Mr. Huffstetler and his wife, Maribeth, reside with their six children in Omaha.
Peg Willingham (Col ’85)
Peg Willingham (Col ’85) is the executive director of the United Nation Foundation’s new Shot@Life campaign, whose mission is to protect children worldwide by providing life-saving vaccines where they are most needed. Ms. Willingham resides in Falls Church, Va., with her husband, Michael Bear; and daughter, Rebecca Namm.

Allison Ferrill Stiller (Engr ’85) is the deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Navy for ship programs, as well as the sponsor for the USS Mississippi.

Virginia Stallings (Med ’80, Med ’83)
Virginia A. Stallings (Med ’80, ’83) received the 2011 David Rall Medal from the Institute of Medicine. She is a nutrition expert from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Charles Romine (Col ’79, Engr ’86 CM)
Charles H. Romine (Col ’79, Engr ’86 L/M) was named director of the Information Technology Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md. NIST is a bureau of the Department of Commerce.
Virginia Shea (Col ’73 CM)
Virginia Fitz Shea (Col ’73 L/M) has a blog, Full Schooldays, that focuses on school schedules, safety and wellness policies, with a particular focus on Fairfax County.
Albert Justice (Col ’59 CM)
Albert N. Justice (Col ’59 L/M) retired after 50 years as a commercial real estate developer and consultant in Virginia and Florida. Among his many contributions to the industry were his service as president of the Richmond Board of Realtors; as national president of the Institute of Real Estate Management; as chairman of the Committee of 100, an economic development entity in Florida; and as a member of the board of directors and executive committee of Sun Trust Bank.
Thomas Pettigrew (Col ’52)
Thomas F. Pettigrew (Col ’52) received the Career Achievement Award of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. Mr. Pettigrew is a research professor of social psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Christina Brown (Col ’10, Educ ’11)
Christina Brown (Col ’10, Educ ’11) and Trevor Badorrek (Col ’11 L/M) were married on July 30, 2011, in Charlottesville. The ceremony took place at Ivy Creek United Methodist Church and the reception was held at the Colonnade Club in Pavilion VII. The wedding party included Kim Brown Calder (Arch ’06 L/M), Hannah Jones (Col ’10), Jeannie Adler (Col ’09), Lisa Keller (Col ’11), Reed Bernick (Col ’11 L/M), Mark Samaan (Com ’11 L/M), and Nathan Brunelle (Col ’11, Engr ’14 L/M). The couple lives in Reston, Va.

Meagan Thomasson (Engr ’06)
Meagan J. Thomasson (Engr ’06) is an associate at Kaufman and Canoles in the law firm’s Norfolk, Va., office. Her practice will focus on corporate transactions.

Erika Glavan (Col ’04, Educ ’05 CM)
Erika Glavan (Col ’04, Educ ’05 L/M) and Thomas Caruso (Col ’04 L/M) were married on Aug. 6, 2011, in Boston. Jenny Sherman Moloney (Educ ’02) was their photographer. Dr. Caruso is completing the last year of his anesthesia residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Ms. Glavan is a kindergarten teacher in Wellesley, Mass. In the summer of 2012, they will be moving to Palo Alto, Calif., where Dr. Caruso will begin a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia at Stanford University.

Alyse Lynn Garber (Col ’04) and Jonathan Ashby Craun (Com ’01) were married on Sept. 4, 2011. The couple met in 2002 while students at U.Va. They currently reside in San Antonio, Texas, where Dr. Craun is completing his residency in radiology at the Brooke Army Medical Center, and Ms. Garber is a solutions planner for Campbell-Ewald, an advertising agency.

Brad Chase (Col ’03) was recognized by PR News in its annual “15 to Watch” list, which recognizes the top communications and public relations executives in the nation under the age of 30. Mr. Chase works for Capitol Media Partners, an independent communications and public affairs consultancy.
Adam Spanberger (Engr ’02)
Adam Spanberger (Engr ’02) and Abigail Davis Spanberger (Col ’01) welcomed their second daughter, Charlotte Elise, on April 9, 2011. Charlotte joins a sister, Claire Lucille. The family lives in Brussels, Belgium. Charlotte is the niece of Meredith Davis (Col ’11 L/M) and Ben Scribner (Col ’96), and is the goddaughter of Brian Dofflemyer (Engr ’02).

Matthew Newsom (Col ’01 L/M) and Kathryn Kreisa Newsom (Educ ’02 L/M) welcomed twin girls, Taylor Charlotte and Claire Mae, on June 19, 2011. The family resides in Smithfield, Va.

Deon DeMond Brown (Engr ’99 L/M) and his wife, Michele, welcomed a daughter, Nola Renée, on Oct. 22, 2011. Nola is the couple’s first child, and joins brother Treyvon Charles Burgess, 16, and sister Nadia Amore Burgess, 10. The blended family resides in Rochester, N.Y., where Mr. Brown directs test engineering efforts at ITT Exelis Geospatial Systems.

Mark Knauf-Nakamura (Col ’94 CM)
Mark Knauf-Nakamura (Col ’94 L/M) and his husband, Shin, welcomed twin sons, Ghen James and Ryden Phyllip, on Oct. 25, 2011. Mr. Knauf-Nakamura is the global leader of content strategy and a senior principal with KPMG. He and his family became Canadian citizens on Oct. 4, 2011, and currently live in Toronto.

Linda S. Godleski (Med ’82, ’86) received the David M. Worthen Award for Career Achievement in Educational Excellence. Dr. Godleski is the associate chief of staff for education in the VA Connecticut Healthcare System.
Richard Birkel (Grad ’81, Grad ’83)
Richard Birkel (Grad ’81, ’83) is vice president and director of the Self-Care Management Alliance, part of the National Council on Aging. Mr. Birkel previously served as chief executive of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving and held the John and Betty Pope Distinguished Chair in Caregiving at Georgia Southwestern State University.

Robert Schwab (Col ’79, Med ’83 L/M) is a physician executive in Dallas who lectures, writes and sings about the convergence of the humanities and medicine. He recently published his first novel, Holy Water, a medical coming-of-age story about the impact of the French Quarter on a physician in training.

Robert Graboyes (Col ’76 CM)
Robert F. Graboyes (Col ’76) serves on the executive board of the Healthcare Delivery Innovation Alliance and was elected president of the National Economists Club in Washington, D.C. Mr. Graboyes is the senior fellow for health and economics at the NFIB Research Foundation in Washington, D.C. He teaches health economics at Virginia Commonwealth University, George Mason University and the U.Va. School of Nursing.
John Taylor (Arch ’71)
John S. Taylor (Arch ’71) contributed a dozen drawings to a small desk calendar, the proceeds from which will be donated to two nonprofit organizations doing work in local communities struggling to recover from the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck the Tohoku region of Japan.
