Chris Bickford (Col ’89) is a photographer in New York City and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. His work on the Venetian Carnival was featured in the New York Times in February and in the December 2008 issue of China’s Vision magazine. His photo of hang gliders at Jockey’s Ridge ran as a double-page spread in National Geographic Traveler’s January 2009 “Then and Now” photo annual, along with a brief write-up. Mr. Bickford’s project “After the Storm: A Life of Surf on the Outer Banks” is featured in burn magazine, an online showcase for up-and-coming photographers curated by David Alan Harvey, and will also be featured this year at Charlottesville’s Look3 Festival of the Photograph in June. His project “In the Night,” a mood piece on hipster culture on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, was chosen last year as a finalist in the inaugural Emerging Photographer Fund, sponsored by the Magnum Foundation. Mr. Bickford’s project “Night Dance,” an abstract treatment of a modern dance performance, is on exhibit at the Outer Banks Forum and other venues. He will have a solo exhibition at Ferris State University in Michigan in November. Mr. Bickford’s photography is located at chrisbickford.com.

Brown Vanguard Award from the Morehouse School of Medicine in recognition of his work as co-chair of the Greater Grady Task Force, created by the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. Calder Loth (Arch ’65, ’67 L/M) received the first annual Secretary of the Interior Historic Preservation Award from U.S. Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne in December. Mr. Loth is a senior architectural historian with Virginia’s Department of Historic Resources, where he has worked since 1968. He is a member of the University of Virginia’s Historic Preservation Advisory Committee. As a longstanding member of the Commonwealth of Virginia Art & Architecture Review Board, Mr. Loth has served as an adviser in the restoration of the Virginia Governor’s Mansion, the Virginia State Capitol and James Madison’s Montpelier estate in Orange County. Marshall Brannon (Col ’62 L/M) presented the first annual Marshall Brannon FLAVA Excellence in Teaching Award, Post-Secondary, on Nov. 1, 2008, at the Foreign Language Association of Virginia’s annual conference in Richmond, Va. The group renamed the award for Mr. Brannon last year in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of foreign language education. He served nine years as a high school French teacher in Chesapeake, 20 years as supervisor of foreign language education with the Virginia Department of Education and 29 years as an adjunct faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University. In the mid-1980s, Mr. Brannon co-founded Virginia’s Governor’s Foreign Language Academies. In 1999, he was a recipient of the FLAVA Distinguished Service Award. He and his wife of 46 years, Ann, have two sons, David and Stephen Brannon (Col ’89).

Charles M. Crump (Law ’37) retired from the practice of law after 71 years on Oct. 9, 2008, his 95th birthday. The Commercial Appeal, a Memphis, Tenn., newspaper, profiled him on his retirement in its Oct. 14, 2008, issue. He practiced law with Apperson Crump, a firm founded by his grandfather, where his legal career focused on trusts and estates. He received many awards and helped establish Memphis Area Legal Services.


Top
