Simrat Jassal (Col ’21 CM)

Simrat Jassal (COL ’21 CM) is the president and founder of Premed Peers, a nonprofit that is providing free and affordable MCAT tutoring to students across the nation. Premed Peers has reached over 2000 students across the nation and provided them with mentorship and support during the medical admissions process. The nonprofit also provides students with essay, resume, and private tutoring help. Simrat will continue the efforts for Premed Peers and is hoping to give back to the Charlottesville community. Premed Peers is a national nonprofit that provides free and affordable tutoring to premedical students across the nation. We are a group of undergraduate and medical students across the country who have all struggled, yet succeeded, on the MCAT and want to give back to other fellow pre-meds. We offer a low-cost prep course called MCAT101. The courses are lecture-style that cover high (and low) yield topics on the MCAT and run for approximately 1 hour. We believe that medical educational barriers should not deter students from pursuing medicine. 

A.J. Frey (Col ’08)

A.J. Frey (Col ’08 CM) has joined the Washington, DC, office of international law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher as a partner in the Investment Funds practice. A.J. joins Gibson from Greenspring Associates, a diversified venture capital platform with over $13B in Assets Under Management, where he served as General Counsel. His practice focuses on the formation and operation of private investment funds across a variety of fund strategies, including private equity, growth equity, venture capital and real asset funds. A.J. resides in Washington, DC with his wife, Brenna, and their two boys, Felix and Max.

Shane Rau (Res ’08)

Job announcement on November 5, 2021

Dr. Shane Rau (Res ’08) works for Array Behavioral Care, a nationwide telepsychiatry company, as Vice President and Associate Medical Director for the Scheduled Care and AtHome Care lines of business. In this role, he provides telepsychiatry services to adults in multiple states and supervises 60 clinicians providing similar services.  He also directs quality management projects for these lines of business to establish systems of data analysis to ensure Array’s clinicians are improving lives. He is proud of Array and his position within it and attributes a good deal of his leadership ability, clinical skills and clinical knowledge to his time as a resident in Psychiatry at UVA Health System, and, in particular, the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences! He and his life, Melinda, live in Williamsburg. 

 

Emily Barksdale (Batten ’21)

Sam Heath (Grad ’14)

Sam Heath (Grad ’14) has been appointed manager of the Equal Justice USA Evangelical Network, a platform for faith leaders across the political spectrum who seek to transform the justice system by promoting responses to violence that are rooted in the values of racial equity, redemption and healing.

Heath, an educator by profession, is an elder at Trinity Presbytery Church in Charlottesville where he has been the coordinator of major educational conferences, including Race: Unity in Diversity, which came in the wake of the so-called Unite the Right Rally in 2017. He also founded and co-chairs a Multiethnicity Ministry Team tasked with helping move Trinity to be an increasingly multi-ethnic organization in both its color and culture.

Equal Justice USA is a national organization working to transform the justice system by promoting responses to violence that break cycles of trauma. Our Evangelical Network unites Evangelicals under a bold vision of justice transformation, so that violence is rare and every community is safe and healthy.

Wilson Craig (Col ’16)

Job announcement on October 11, 2021

Wilson Craig (Col ’16) has launched Waterbird Spirits. The company creates a variety of canned cocktails with real distilled spirits that are now sold in 22 states and will be available in an additional 18 states this year.

The Waterbird name pays homage to historic Water Street in Charlottesville, the location of the company headquarters. 

A third manufacturing facility is coming online this year, in addition to the Waterbird Headquarters in Charlottesville and a production facility in Lakeland, Florida.

Laura Griffin (Col ’00)

Job announcement on October 6, 2021

Laura Griffin (Col ’00) has been appointed Chief Deputy Clerk of Operations for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, effective October 18, 2021.  Laura previously served as the Clerk of Court (senior court administrator) for the Chesterfield and Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts.  She will work at the Spottswood W. Robinson III and Robert R. Merhige, Jr., Federal Courthouse in Richmond.

Deon Brown (Engr ’99)

Job announcement on October 3, 2021

Deon Brown (Engr ’94 CM) recently accepted a technical engineering position as Test Architect with Paragon Space Development Corporation. He will be the lead point of contact for developing test strategies for spaceflight hardware supplying environmental control and life support functions to Lunar Gateway, the first planned space station in lunar orbit, as the United States returns to the Moon under NASA’s Artemis Program.

Sharon Want (Col ’84)

Sharon Want (Col ’84 CM) has been been promoted to Member of Caplin & Drysdale.

Want provides practical comprehensive legal advice to tax-exempt organizations.  She has counseled nonprofits for 20 years, rejoining Caplin & Drysdale after serving as in-house counsel at the American Cancer Society, where she advised on legal issues involving ACS’s global health and government-funded programs and ACS’s 501(c)(4) affiliate, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.  She also served as a senior advisor to the IRS Director of Exempt Organizations.  She works closely with a wide range of small and large public charities, private foundations and social welfare organizations, and she regularly provides counsel on tax compliance and governance issues. 

Junius Fulton (Col ’81)

Jennifer Beckett (Arch ’94)

Beckett has served in the Department of Defense for over 17 years, with 11 years as a federal employee. Beckett is responsible for developing protocol policy for the country’s newest military service and providing expert advice to senior leaders within the Department on matters regarding customs, courtesies, diplomatic formality, order of precedence, and etiquette. John Stinneford (Col ’90) has been named the Edward Rood Eminent Scholar Chair and Professor of Law at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. He researches, teaches, and consults in the areas of legal ethics, criminal law, criminal procedure, and constitutional law. His work has been cited by the United States Supreme Court, several state supreme courts and federal courts of appeal, and numerous scholars.

Thomas Gibson (Col ’06 CM)

Tom Gibson (Col ’06 CM) has joined Community Preservation Partners, a national affordable housing developer committed to creativity, performance and purpose, as senior development manager.

Gibson comes to CPP with extensive experience structuring and managing complex multifamily developments through creative financing strategies and public-private partnerships. In this capacity, Gibson leads CPP East’s in-house team of developers through the successful completion of preservation projects. He is responsible for assembling and managing all external team members across various stages of development, including financiers, architects, designers, engineers and contractors.

Gibson is a veteran and current artillery officer in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. After returning to civilian life, he consulted for the Housing Authority of Prince George’s County and was formerly vice president of development for Stratford Capital Group where he managed new construction and complex acquisition rehabilitation projects in Northern Virginia, Maryland, Georgia and Florida, totaling 561 units and $143.2 million in total development costs. Gibson received his M.B.A. from Cornell University, an M.P.S. in real estate from Georgetown University. He is currently pursuing a Master of Liberal Arts (ALM) from Harvard University.

Suzanne Gannon (Col ’89)

Journalist and essayist Suzanne Gannon (COL ’89 CM) has parlayed her insatiable curiosity and her reportorial skills in interviewing and fact-finding into a fresh endeavor known as The Essay Conqueror. In this capacity she works as a writing coach to students grappling with the daunting task of the college-admissions essay in the test-optional Age of Corona, when writing is again enjoying a moment in the limelight. Working one-on-one and in small groups over Zoom, and using reading and writing exercises that emphasize discovery and exposition, Suzanne has advised students from across the country who have applied to undergrad and grad programs alike, both as first-years and as transfers, in an array of disciplines. In each case, she challenges students to find the truest voice in which to tell their most authentic story.

Secureworks is a global cybersecurity leader dedicated to providing innovative, best-in-class security solutions to protect organizations from cyber crime. Wendy first joined Secureworks in 2008 leading finance and most recently served as the company’s president and SVP, Customer Success, where she led and implemented a customer-centric approach to security partnership. Recently, Wendy was recognized in the number one position in The Software Report’s “Top 25 Women Leaders in Cybersecurity of 2021.” Wendy lives in Atlanta, GA with her family and is a Liaison for AFS Intercultural Programs, an international youth organization.

Elisabeth Kearney (Engr ’10) wrote an update about her path to graduation and what she’s doing now: I was originally scheduled to graduate in 2005, but at the end of my 2nd year, my father, Michael Kearney (Engr ’72), died, and I had a hard time being in school for a few years following that. After living in Los Angeles for a couple of years, I moved back to Charlottesville and re-enrolled at UVA and graduated in 2010. After attending naturopathic medical school in Tempe, Arizona, and opening my first practice in Carlsbad, New Mexico, I moved back to Charlottesville last fall to open my practice here and settle down closer to family.”

Sam Bellas (Col ’01 CM)

Sam Bellas (Col ’01 CM) will be promoted in July to partner in EY’s strategy and transactions practice, where he helped launch and scale a corporate real estate offering for organizations navigating mergers, divestitures and restructurings. Prior to joining EY, Bellas helped develop similar internal start-ups for the EYP mission critical facilities group for data centers, the Clark Construction Group for infrastructure finance and development, and Deloitte Consulting for federal capital and real estate transformation. This year, he celebrates (virtually) both his 20-year UVA reunion and his 10-year reunion with MBA classmates from Oxford. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife and two young children, whom he is excited to introduce to sailing this summer in Annapolis.

Greg Van Patten (Col ’92 CM) will serve as the interim dean of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences at Middle Tennessee State University starting July 1, 2021. The college is MTSU’s largest college and is home to more than 5,500 students and 210 faculty. Van Patten is a professor in the Department of Chemistry and has served as the chair of that department since 2012.

Kim Nelson (Col ’78)

Linda L. Fox Bryant (Col ’88, Darden ’21 CM) was elected to a six-year term as a judge for the general district court in Chesapeake, Virginia. She received her law degree from the College of William Mary Marshall Wythe School of Law in 1992, after which she served in the U.S. Army as a JAGC. Since leaving active duty in the mid-1990s, she has served Virginia in many different legal roles. She will receive her MBA from the Darden School of Business in May 2021. Her husband Scott, served in the U.S. Navy, and her daughter is Alexandra Connell (Col ’19, Batten ’20).

Aysha Schomburg (Col ’95)

Aysha Schomburg (Col ’95) was appointed as an associate commissioner in the Biden administration. In this role, she will oversee the roughly $10 billion U.S. Children’s Bureau, which regulates federal funding for the nation’s vast network of state- and county-run agencies responsible for foster care, child maltreatment investigations, and prevention services. Prior to her appointment, Aysha worked for New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services, one of the largest local foster care and prevention agencies in the country, where she helped expand protections for parents at risk of child abuse and neglect investigations. She’s also worked on legislation expanding support in schools for LGBTQ students, among other local laws focused on children. During an earlier stint at ACS, she helped establish savings accounts for foster youth and a hotline for recruiting foster parents.

Chris Frey (Engr ’85 CM)

Chris Frey (Engr ’85 CM), the Glenn E. Futrell Distinguished University Professor of Environmental Engineering at N.C. State University, has taken a leave of absence to serve as an appointee of the Biden-Harris Administration. He is serving as the deputy assistant administrator for science policy of the Office of Research and Development at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Together with the 1500 ORD career scientists and staff at 12 U.S. locations, Dr. Frey is focused on the development of science that meets the needs of partners in regulatory offices, regional offices, states, tribes, and communities, that addresses urgent priorities of climate change and environmental justice, and that anticipates the Agency’s needs in the coming years.

Mark Brugger (Col ’85 CM)

Mark Brugger (Col ’85 CM) was appointed by New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy through the State Board of Education to serve for two years on the New Jersey State Special Education Advisory Council. The council advises on unmet educational needs of students with disabilities and comments on state program plans, proposed rules and regulations, and distribution of funds. We assist with developing reports and policies as well as advising on corrective action and implementation plans. I look forward to working with the Board of Education and my esteemed colleagues on the Council to improve special education in New Jersey and to provide educational opportunity and equality for children with special needs. Along with this volunteering, I also serve on two boards to advocate for people with disabilities: Learning Disabilities Association of NJ and National Special Education Advocacy Institute.

Robert G. Saunders (Com ’90) was recently appointed by the Virginia Legislature to serve as a Judge on the General District Court for the city of Newport News, Virginia, after practicing law for 24 years.
