Christopher Bonastia (Col ’89 CM)
Christopher Bonastia (Col ’89 CM) published a book, Southern Stalemate: Five Years without Public Education in Prince Edward County, Virginia, with the University of Chicago Press in 2012. He is an associate professor of sociology at Lehman College and the City University of New York Graduate Center in New York. This is his second book.
Jim Reed (Col ’89 CM)
Jim Reed (Col ’89 CM) received the 2012 Outstanding General Counsel Award from the Atlanta Business Chronicle and the Georgia chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel. Mr. Reid serves as chief legal counsel for YKK Corporation of America in Atlanta.
Alice Pope (Com ’98 CM)
Alice Pope (Com ’98 CM) is the chief financial officer of Wellmont Health System, an eight-hospital system based in Kingsport, Tenn. She previously served as Wellmont’s senior vice president of finance, managed care and revenue cycle. Ms. Pope has played an essential role in physician practice integrations for the system.
Chris Maimone (Col ’88 CM)
Chris Maimone (Col ’88 CM) is an attorney with the Department of Health and Human Services Office of General Counsel in the General Law Division. He recently rode the Baltimore Bicycle Club’s Civil War Century, his second 100-mile bike tour. Mr. Maimone resides with his wife and their four children in Fairfax, Va.
Ann Francisco (Col ’88 CM)
Ann Francisco (Col ’88 CM) and her husband, Louis Ashamallah, live in Thousand Oaks, Calif., with their twin sons, Kyle and Logan, age 8. Ms. Francisco is a financial analyst for Warner Pacific Insurance Services.
Henry Chambers (Col ’88, Law ’91 CM)
Henry Chambers (Col ’88, Law ’91 CM) received the 2012 Distinguished Educator Award from the University of Richmond. The award recognizes excellence in teaching at the university. Mr. Chambers teaches and writes in the areas of constitutional law, criminal law, law and religion, employment discrimination, evidence and sexual harassment. He has taught law at the University of Richmond since 2004.
Frank Williams (Com ’87 CM)
Frank Williams (Com ’87 CM) was selected for inclusion in the 2013 edition of The Best Lawyers in America. He is an attorney with Smith Moore Leatherwood in Greenville, S.C., where his practice focuses on corporate matters, including compliance, governance, and mergers and acquisitions.
J. Tinkham (Law ’87)
J. Tinkham (Law ’87) has formed the Tinkham Law Group in Norfolk, Va. His practice focuses on commercial mergers and acquisitions, commercial real estate transactions and business succession matters. His oldest son, Spencer, is a sophomore at Baylor University in Texas, and his youngest son, Clay, is a junior in high school.
Marty Hanifin (Grad ’87, Law ’93)
Marty Hanifin (Grad ’87, Law ’93) is vice president for finance and administration at Colorado State University-Pueblo. He previously served as director of administrative services for campus operations at the University of Oregon, where he oversaw the units of budget and finance, purchasing, contracting and payroll.
Marshall Twinam (Col ’86 CM)
Marshall Twinam (Col ’86 CM) has started his own advertising agency based in Asbury Park, N.J. He previously worked for more than 20 years at some of the country’s leading creative advertising agencies in Texas and New York City.
Rebecca Rovit (Grad ’85)
Rebecca Rovit (Grad ’85) published The Jewish Kulturbund Theatre Company in Nazi Berlin with the University of Iowa Press. Through primary documents—correspondence between the Berlin Kulturbund’s theatre and the Reich Ministry of Propaganda and Enlightenment; play scripts and role books; production reviews and photographs; letters and memoirs; and interviews with artists who survived World War II—to show how increasingly restrictive German reality forced Jewish artists to define and redefine their identity and culture. Ms. Rovit is an assistant professor of theatre at the University of Kansas.
Henry Frey (Engr ’85)
Henry Frey (Engr ’85) , Distinguished University Professor of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at North Carolina State University, received the 2012 Lyman A. Ripperton Environmental Educator Award from the Air & Waste Management Association at the association’s annual meeting in San Antonio. The award is given each year to an influential educator in some field of air pollution control.
Beatriz Hardy (Grad ’84)
Beatriz Hardy (Grad ’84) is Salisbury University’s dean of libraries. She will be instrumental in developing the university’s new academic commons, a facility that will combine the library, special collections and academic support services. Previously, Ms. Hardy served in several administrative positions for the library system at the College of William and Mary and worked for the Maryland Historical Society, where she revamped the society’s imaging services and established its Student Research Center for History.
George Collins (Col ’84, Darden ’92, Grad ’87, Law ’92 CM)
George Collins (Col ’84, Darden ’92, Grad ’87, Law ’92 CM) and his wife, Marketa, welcomed a daughter, Julie Marie, on Aug. 1, 2012. The family lives in Prague.
Mark Beale (Col ’84)
Mark Beale (Col ’84) won the National Park Service 2012 “Paint the Parks” Top 100 award. He won in two regional categories and is one of only three artists to do so. Two of his works will be part of a two-year traveling exhibit of paintings depicting U.S. national parks. American Art Collector Magazine featured his work in three issues this year.
Richard Wood (Engr ’83 CM)
Richard Wood (Engr ’83 CM) is professor of naval science and commanding officer of the Oregon State University Navy ROTC unit. Capt. Wood and his wife, Betsy, recently returned from a two-year tour in Guam, where Capt. Wood served as the commanding officer of Naval Base Guam. The Woods live in Corvallis, Ore.
Louise Phipps Senft (Col ’83 CM)
Louise Phipps Senft (Col ’83 CM) is the founder and lead trainer of Baltimore Mediation. In 2012, Ms. Senft, a mediator and facilitator for various federal agencies and corporate boards, received the Brava! Award from Baltimore SmartCEO magazine in recognition of her work combining entrepreneurship and philanthropy. She serves on the boards of the Maryland Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office, the Maryland Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO), and the international nonprofit organizations Mediators Beyond Borders and Convergence. She previously taught at the Harvard Law School and is currently an adjunct professor teaching mediation and alternative dispute resolution at the University of Maryland School of Law.
W. Scott (Com ’83 CM)
W. Scott (Com ’83 CM) has been selected for the Best Lawyers in America 2013 in the field of real estate law. He is an attorney in the real estate group of Meyer, Unkovic & Scott in Pittsburgh.
Dan Miley (Com ’82)
Dan Miley (Com ’82) and his older daughter, Erin, visited Coba, Quintana Roo, Mexico, and understood why the Mayans ended their long form calendar in 2012: the oppressive humidity.
Daniel Mendelsohn (Col ’82)
Daniel Mendelsohn (Col ’82) was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences on Oct. 6, 2012. The American Academy, founded in 1780, is an independent research center that draws from its members’ expertise to conduct studies in science and technology policy, global security, the humanities and culture, social policy and education. Mr. Mendelsohn, an author and critic, is the Charles Ranlett Flint Professor of Humanities at Bard College. He is the author of seven books and has published numerous review essays in the New Yorker, the New York Times Magazine and Newsweek, among others.
Mark Hunter (Com ’82 CM)
Mark Hunter (Com ’82 CM) has been recommended to the diplomatic class of counselor in the Senior Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State, subject to presidential nomination, Senate confirmation and presidential attestation. Mr. Hunter was recently named director of finance for the U.S. economic development program in Pakistan.
David Dallas (Com ’82, Law ’87)
David Dallas (Com ’82, Law ’87) has been named a 2013 Lawyer of the Year by The Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Dallas is a corporate law attorney with Williams Mullen in Charlottesville and serves as general counsel for many area companies. He regularly advises clients about commercial transactions and disputes, venture capital financings, business purchases and sales and owner disagreements. Mr. Dallas serves on the board of directors of the Thomas Jefferson Partnership for Economic Development and on the board of trustees of the Shenandoah National Park Trust.
Peter MacKeith (Col ’81 CM)
Peter MacKeith (Col ’81 CM) was appointed Finland’s honorary consul for Missouri on June 22, 2012, in an inauguration ceremony led by Ambassador Ritva Jolkkonen, Finnish consul general to the United States. Mr. MacKeith curated the Nordic Pavilion exhibition of architecture from Finland, Sweden and Norway at the 13th Biennale of Architecture in Venice, Italy, which opened on August 27, 2012. He is currently associate dean, associate professor of architecture and adjunct associate curator of architecture and design at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.
Zia Ahmed (Grad ’82 CM)
Zia Ahmed (Grad ’82 CM) is the founder and managing director of Small Enterprise Assistance Funds Bangladesh Ventures, which invests in small and medium enterprises in Bangladesh. He is also the founder and chairman of the board of directors for Venture Investment Partners Bangladesh Limited, which invests in micro and small enterprises in Bangladesh. His elder son, Zuhayr N. Ahmed (Engr ’16) began his first year at U.Va. this fall.
Patricia Bremer (Col ’81 CM)
Patricia Bremer (Col ’81 CM) received the 2012 State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service. Ms. Bremer is the sociology department administrator at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, N.Y. She also serves as chair of the arts and sciences academic judiciary committee, is a member of the arts and sciences senate and its executive committee, and is secretary of the professional employees governing board. She and her husband, John Buchner, live in Ridge, N.Y.
Scott Blackwell (Col ’81 CM)
Scott Blackwell (Col ’81 CM) serves as chairman of Leadership Metro Richmond, a local organization that keeps Richmond-area leaders informed, engaged and inspired. Mr. Blackwell is also the chief culture officer of Health Diagnostic Laboratory, a company that provides diagnostic testing and health counseling related to early detection of risk factors for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and fatty liver disease.
Mark Ezell (Law ’80)
Mark Ezell (Law ’80) is recognized in the 2013 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the public finance law category. He is an attorney in the Birmingham, Ala., office of Haskell Slaughter Young & Rediker.
Alma Gottlieb (Grad ’78, Grad ’83)
Alma Gottlieb (Grad ’78, Grad ’83) published a book, Braided Worlds, co-authored with Philip Graham, with the University of Chicago Press. She is a professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Tracey Ford (Col ’78 CM)
Tracey Ford (Col ’78 CM) is the president of Maryvale Preparatory School in Brooklandville, Md. Maryvale is an independent Catholic school for girls in grades 6 through 12. Several U.Va. alumni are on her staff and many Maryvale graduates are current or former ’Hoos.
Beth Brykman (Com ’78 CM)
Beth Brykman (Com ’78 CM) published Second Wind: The Resilience of Women, an e-book retelling 12 stories of inspiration and hope. The book, published in August 2012 by BookBaby, applauds the ability of women to bounce back from all types of adversity. All proceeds go to the charitable organizations mentioned in the book.

Steven Farrar (Com ’77 CM) was recognized in the 2012 edition of Chambers USA and was selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2013. He is an attorney in the general commercial litigation group of Smith Moore Leatherwood in Greenville, S.C.

I got engaged to Tim Pote (JMU) on October 26, 2012! It happened at Lydia Cabins outside of Charlottesville. We’re hoping to have our wedding in the fall of 2013.

Kevin Finn (Arch ’97 CM) and his wife, Kelly, welcomed their third child, Patrick Cahill, on May 24, 2012. Patrick joins brother Matthew, 4, and sister Molly, 6. The family resides in Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y.
Erin Heisterman (Col ’08 CM)
Erin Heisterman (Col ’08 CM) and Ryan Erickson were married on Aug. 18, 2012, at King Family Vineyards in Crozet, Va. The Ericksons reside in Buffalo, N.Y., where Mr. Erickson is a manager at Apple and Ms. Erickson is the director of marketing at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce in nearby Hamburg, N.Y.
Kevin Day (Arch ’00, Arch ’07)
Kevin Day (Arch ’00, Arch ’07) and Jennifer Ervine Day (Col ’00) welcomed their second son, Oliver Graham, on Nov. 19, 2012. Oliver joins big brother Conor Owen, 5. The Days live in Durham, N.C., where Mr. Day is a project architect and Ms. Day is a doctoral candidate at the Duke University School of Nursing.

Danna Weiss (Col ’02 CM) and Jeffrey K. Lorch were married at the Clifton Inn in Charlottesville on July 8, 2012. The Lorches reside in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
John Werren (Col ’75)
John Werren (Col ’75) was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences on Oct. 6, 2012. The American Academy, founded in 1780, is an independent research center that draws from its members’ expertise to conduct studies in science and technology policy, global security, the humanities and culture, social policy and education. Mr. Werren is the Nathaniel and Helen Wisch Professor of Biology at the University of Rochester. His research interests are in evolutionary genetics.
Gail Griffin (Grad ’74, Grad ’77)
Gail Griffin (Grad ’74, Grad ’77) will retire from the English department at Kalamazoo College, where she has taught for 35 years. She is the only Kalamazoo faculty member to win both of the college’s faculty awards, one for scholarship and one for teaching. Ms. Griffin published “The Events of October”: Murder-Suicide on a Small Campus, a nonfiction account of the killing of a woman student by her ex-boyfriend on the Kalamazoo campus in 1999, with Wayne State University Press.

Peter Curry (Grad ’74) has been selected for the 2012 New York Super Lawyers-Metro list. He is an attorney in the real estate group of Farrell Fritz in Uniondale, N.Y.
Richard Brown (Col ’74 CM)
Richard Brown (Col ’74 CM) is the town administrator of Freetown, Mass. Prior to his current position, he was city manager of East Providence, R.I., and served as a disaster assistance employee with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s long-term community recovery cadre. While with FEMA, Mr. Brown assisted with recovery efforts in Alabama after the tornadoes of April 2011.

Margaret Rankovic (Col ’04, Educ ’05) and her husband, Boban, welcomed their first child, Marko, on Nov. 15, 2012. The family resides in Miami Beach.

Caroline Turner (Col ’04) and Bradley W. Turner (Com ’04 L/M) welcomed a daughter, May Allison, on Oct. 31, 2012. She joins big brother Ryan, 3, and big sister Carter Ann, 1. The family resides in Richmond, Va.

Dennis Unkovic (Col ’70)
Dennis Unkovic (Col ’70) was selected for inclusion in the 2013 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the field of international trade and finance law. Mr. Unkovic is a partner with Meyer, Unkovic & Scott in Pittsburgh. His practice focuses on negotiating complex business transactions within the United States and between American and foreign companies.
Anthony Bibus (Grad ’70)
Anthony Bibus (Grad ’70) has retired to care for family at home. He is a licensed independent social worker and professor emeritus in the social work department at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, where he has taught since 1992, serving as department chair from 2000 to 2009 and as president of the faculty senate from 2005 to 2007. After graduating from the University, he served as a probation counselor in Virginia for four years before moving to Minnesota, where he practiced social work in child welfare. In 2012, he received a lifetime achievement award from the Minnesota chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Mr. Bibus’ most recent publication is Regulating Social Work: A Primer on Licensing Practice, co-authored with Dr. Needha Boutté-Queen and published by Lyceum Books in 2011.
Reynold Levy (Grad ’68, Grad ’73)
Reynold Levy (Grad ’68, Grad ’73) was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences on Oct. 6, 2012. The American Academy, founded in 1780, is an independent research center that draws from its members’ expertise to conduct studies in science and technology policy, global security, the humanities and culture, social policy and education. He is the president of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, whose constituents include the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Ballet. During his 10 years with the Lincoln Center, Mr. Levy has expanded both the center’s campus and its collaborative spirit.

Lytle Wurtzel (Com ’04 CM)
Lytle Wurtzel (Com ’04 CM) married Brian Robert Smith in Winter Park, Fla., on Nov. 17, 2012. The couple resides in Evanston, Ill., where Mr. Smith attends the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Patrick Edwards (Col ’07)
Patrick Edwards (Col ’07) and his wife, Teresa, welcomed their first child, Aiden Carter, on Aug. 15, 2012. The family resides in Wake Forest, N.C., where Mr. Edwards is a doctoral candidate at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and serves as senior pastor at Ridgecrest Baptist Church.
