Greg Haydasz (Engr ’99 CM)

Greg Haydasz (Engr ’99 L/M) and Megan Poyhonen Haydasz (Col ’99 L/M) welcomed their second child, Chase Everett, on Nov. 17, 2010. Chase joins a sister, Paige Avery, 4. The family resides in Arlington, Va.

Peter Gerszten (Col ’88 CM)

Peter C. Gerszten (Col ’88 L/M) is the Peter E. Sheptak Professor of Neurological Surgery and Radiation Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is married to Kristina Gerszten, a physician at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital of Pittsburgh. They have two children, Jacob, 13; and Marcella, 11.

Michael Gareth Durgavich (Col ’86 L/M) is the managing attorney of the Kingdom of Bahrain branch of ASAR-Al Ruwayeh and Partners. He is listed in the Legal 500 and International Financial Law Review 1000 publications
Judy MacFarland (Nurs ’75)

Judy Pandy MacFarland (Nurs ’75) received the Susan J. Kramer Excellence in School Nursing Award from the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland. She has been a school nurse for 16 years, and has worked at Brady Middle School for 12 years.

Ed Baxa (Col ’75, Law ’78) is the recipient of the 2011 Judge J.C. “Jake” Stone Distinguished Service Award, bestowed by the Legal Aid Society of Florida’s Orange County Bar Association.
Ed Modell (Law ’74 CM)
Ed Modell (Law ’74 L/M) is the 2011 president of the International Coach Federation. He also serves as the ombudsman for the Maryland Judiciary, providing coaching and workplace dispute resolution services for Judiciary employees and addressing concerns with the courts of Maryland citizens.
Patricia Paige (Educ ’74)
Patricia Estes Paige (Educ ’74) retired as principal of the Clearview Early Childhood Center in Martinsville, Va.
Norman Ward (Col ’73)
Norman “Chip” Ward (Col ’73) is the new executive director of the office of the ombudsman for the commonwealth of Kentucky’s Cabinet for Health and Family Services. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Ward held various roles in marketing, strategic account management and communications for several firms in the network systems and industrial software development industries. He lives with his wife, Karen, in Winchester, Ky.

Charles F. Mullen (Col ’62 L/M) was the keynote speaker at the 2011 Illinois College of Optometry commencement ceremony on May 21, 2011. Dr. Mullen was president of the institution from 1996 to 2002. At the ceremony, he also received an honorary doctor of science degree in optometry.

Myles K. Glancy (Col ’08 L/M) will be pursuing a master’s degree in music at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J. He will be studying voice performance and pedagogy.

Sihyun Choi (Com ’08 L/M) has joined Oliver Wyman, a global management consulting firm, in its Dallas office. He was previously with Censeo Consulting Group, a boutique supply chain and operational consulting firm in Washington, D.C.

Kelly Wyatt Bassett (Col ’02 L/M) and her husband, William, welcomed their first child, Lucille Garland, on Nov. 1, 2010. Lucille is the granddaughter of Patrick R. Wyatt (Col ’71). The family resides in Charlottesville.

Robin A. Ward (Educ ’97) had a book, Math + Art = Fun: Activities for Discovering Mathematical Magic in Modern Art, published by Bright Sky Press. Ms. Ward is a clinical assistant professor of mathematics at Rice University.

Anne Bennett Pullen Alexander (Com ’91, Grad ’92 L/M) and her husband, Steve, welcomed a daughter, Mia Reading, on Aug. 21, 2010. Mia joins Cole, her brother. She was born in Dallas.
R. Evans (Arch ’90 CM)
R. Tripp Evans (Arch ’90 L/M) won the Arts Club of Washington’s Marfield Prize, which honors excellence in writing about the arts. He is the author of Grant Wood: A Life, published by Alfred A. Knopf.

Martha Grigsby Rhodes (Com ’87) is owner of Travel With Martha, a full-service, luxury travel consulting company affiliated with Brownell, in Richmond, Va. She specializes in family and group travel around the world.
Henry Ware (Col ’77 CM)
Henry N. Ware Jr. (Col ’77 L/M) has been invited to serve as a member of the Boyd-Graves Conference, a group of lawyers, law professors and judges of the Virginia bar that focuses on improving Virginia’s laws and rules pertaining to state court civil litigation.

John Bates (Law ’66)
John W. Bates III (Law ’66) is the recipient of the 2011 William H. Ruffner Medal in recognition of his support of Virginia Tech. Mr. Bates served on the Virginia Tech Foundation Board of Directors, is co-chair of the Richmond Regional Campaign Committee within The Campaign for Virginia Tech: Invent the Future, and member of the university’s National Campaign Steering Committee. He is managing partner with law firm McGuire Woods.
James Osborne (Com ’66 CM)
James W. Osborne (Com ’66 L/M) has received an appointment to the faculty of the University of Virginia’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies, where he will teach advanced business law. Formerly of Lexington, Va., he served there as an adjunct professor on Washington and Lee’s law faculty while in private practice. Later he served 16 years with the Virginia attorney general’s office. He now resides in Augusta County, Va., and part time in Italy.

Alexander Pugatch (Com ’06 CM)
Alexander Pugatch (Com ’06 L/M) and Elizabeth Dubin (Col ’06 L/M) married on April 9, 2011, at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in New York City. The couple resides in New York City, where Mr. Pugatch is studying for an MBA at Columbia Business School and Ms. Pugatch is an associate account executive for a fundraising and event planning company. The wedding party included Rachel Gittman (Col ’06 L/M), Jessica Meehan (Col ’06 L/M), Ashley Zapf (Col ’06), Evan Topol (Col ’06 L/M) and Samuel Jonas (Col ’06).
Robert West (Educ ’06)
Rob West (Educ ’06) joined the Alpha Delta Epsilon chapter of Kappa Delta Pi. Mr. West is the branch manager and assistant vice president of the M&I Bank in Brandon, Fla. He is also an adjunct instructor at Remington College in Tampa.
Josh Peters (Col ’03 CM)
Josh Peters (Col ’03 L/M) earned a master’s degree in education with a concentration in counseling and development from George Mason University. He is a high school counselor in Fairfax County, Va. Mr. Peters recently completed his fifth season as an assistant high school varsity boys basketball coach. He and his wife, Shauna Berman Peters (Col ’03), reside in Alexandria, Va.
Michael Alexander (Col ’01)
Michael J. Alexander (Grad ’02, ’09 L/M) received Virginia Tech’s 2011 Sporn Award for Excellence in Teaching Introductory Subjects. He is an assistant professor of history.
Brennan Breed (Col ’01)
Brennan Breed (Col ’01) received the 2011 Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship. Mr. Breed is now a doctoral candidate in religion at Emory University. His dissertation, “‘Engraved on a Rock Forever’: Reception History and the Hebrew Bible,” offers a theoretical foundation for the study of the appropriation of biblical texts by diverse communities throughout history.
Gwendolyn Osborn (Col ’99 CM)
Gwendolyn Wilson Osborn (Col ’99 L/M) and her husband, Michael, welcomed their second child, Adelaide Marie Rose, on March 20, 2011. Adelaide joins a sister, Eleanor McKinnon, 2. The family resides in Portland, Ore.
Donna Shifflett (Col ’94, Educ ’94)
Donna Shifflett (Col ’94, Educ ’94) is an elementary school teacher at Ruckersville Elementary in Greene County, Va. In February 2011, she was part of a delegation of 10 teachers from Virginia and 10 teachers from the United Kingdom that traveled to Barbados and met for six days to continue their studies on the transatlantic slave trade, funded by a Teaching American History grant. In March 2011, Ms. Shifflett was a presenter at the National Council for History Education’s conference in Charleston, S.C.

Christopher Decker (Col ’94 L/M) is director of labor relations at Norfolk Southern Corporation. He lives with his wife, Megan Polson Decker (Col ’94 L/M), in Virginia Beach with their children, Henry and Jane.
Carolyn Patton (Col ’92 CM)
Carolyn Patton (Col ’92 L/M) is global head of client relationships at Turner Investments. Ms. Patton, who holds the designation of chartered financial analyst, most recently served as senior vice president, managing director, and global head of consultant relations at Janus Capital Group in Denver.

Austin Bonderer (Engr ’99 CM)
Austin Bonderer (Engr ’99 L/M) started an intellectual property law firm. Located in southern California, the firm specializes in patent prosecution and trademarks. Previously Mr. Bonderer served as in-house counsel for the Foxconn Corporation and was the head of U.S. patent prosecution in the area of nanotechnology.

Barney Breen-Portnoy (Col ’07) is a soldier in the spokesperson’s unit of the Israel Defense Forces. He lives in Tel Aviv.
Cachet Prescott (Col ’01 CM)
Cachet Bird Prescott (Col ’01 L/M) and her husband, Will, welcomed their second child, Saren Avery. Saren was born on March 8, 2011 and joins a sister, Sarai, 3. The family lives on Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Tom Corrigan (Col ’75 CM)
Tom Corrigan (Col ’75 L/M) is chairman of the 2011 Board of Directors for Easter Seals Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore, an organization providing services for children and adults with disabilities. He is senior vice president and chief financial officer of Christiana Care Health System in Delaware. Mr. Corrigan and his wife, Leigh, reside in Greenville, Del. They have been married for 30 years and have three daughters.
Erin Camden (Col ’02 CM)

Erin Gore Camden (Col ’02 L/M) and Jeremy Camden (Col ’02 L/M) welcomed their first child, Graham Cullen, on Feb. 22, 2011. The family resides in Richmond, Va., where Ms. Camden is a physician assistant and Dr. Camden is a radiology resident.
Julia Eckert (Col ’09 CM)
Julia Eckert (Col ’09 L/M) is the deputy press secretary for Senator Richard Shelby in Washington, D.C. She has also co-founded a charity, Operation Incubation, which helps to combat infant mortality in the developing world.

Leslie Taylor Lillard (Col ’04) and her husband, John, welcomed their first child, Molly Elizabeth, on Oct. 26, 2010. The family resides in Madison County, Va.
