Marion Harrison (Col ’51 CM)

Marion Edwyn Harrison (Col ’51 L/M) completed his 14th lecture abroad with a U.S. Supreme Court Justice this year in Strasbourg, France. Mr. Harrison is president of the Free Congress Research and Education Foundation, Inc., and is a Washington, D.C., and Virginia layer, with an office in Alexandria, Va. His commentary, Notable News Now, is posted on freecongress.org and is e-mailed to 6,800 people. Mr. Harrison and his wife reside in Arlington, Va., with a second home in Scottsdale, Ariz. Two of their three children hold graduate degrees from U.Va. and their eldest grandchild holds a University college degree.

James W. Miller (Col ’72, Med ’77) was named to the Sports Medicine Committee for FINA, the federation that governs aquatic sports worldwide, including at the Olympics. Dr. Miller was named at the recent FINA World Championships in Rome. The appointment makes him one of eight physicians worldwide on the committee and the only one from the United States. He is the first American on the committee in a decade. He has a four-year appointment, which runs through the London Olympics in 2012. Dr. Miller is one of the National Team physicians for USA Swimming and is the former president of United States Masters Swimming. He has traveled to competitions internationally, both with USA Swimming and as a doping control delegate for FINA. Locally, Dr. Miller treats swimmers in his medical practice, where he specializes in family practice and sports medicine, and he also coaches Masters swimming and is a competitive Masters swimmer himself. His practice is in Midlothian, Va., at Family Practice Specialists of Richmond, a business he founded 15 years ago. Dr. Miller has associate clinical professor positions with both VCU and U.Va.

John D. Reeser (Col ’85 L/M) has been mobilized by the U.S. Navy to serve as the director of manpower and personnel for Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa in Djibouti, Africa, for one year. CJTF HOA employs an indirect approach to counter violent extremism and works to prevent the exploitation of instability by building internal capacities of East Africa countries. Captain Reeser is responsible for the administration and manpower allocation of the joint task force, which includes 1,800 personnel from all branches of the U.S. military, coalition forces, partner nations, and civilians.

Donald Gray Heppner Jr. (Col ’78, Med ’83 L/M) received the Kiwanis International 2009 World Service Medal for his role in the development of a promising vaccine against malaria, a disease that kills 3,000 children every day. Col. Heppner is deputy commander of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Md., named for Maj. Walter Reed (Med 1869). The institute’s mission is to develop FDA-approved drugs and vaccines to protect against HIV/AIDS, malaria, diarrhea, dengue fever, leishmaniasis and other tropical diseases. Working with GlaxoSmithKline, his team of scientists conducted studies in Africa, Asia, Europe and the U.S. of the most promising malaria vaccine, known as RTS,S. Col. Heppner and his wife, Mary Leach Heppner (Col ’82 L/M); and their son, William, live in Vienna, Va. Their daughters, Charlotte Heppner (Col ’10 L/M) and Virginia Heppner (Col ’12 L/M), are the most recent Wahoos in the family.

Holly Loiseau (Col ’91) is president-elect of the Women’s Bar Association of Washington, D.C. Ms. Loiseau is a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of the law firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges. Her term as president will begin in May 2010. A member of Weil Gotshal’s Complex Commercial Litigation and Product Liability practices, Ms. Loiseau has litigated cases across a variety of disciplines and has extensive experience coordinating class actions and multi-jurisdictional cases for clients in various industries and has successfully advised clients in grand jury proceedings and Congressional investigations. Ms. Loiseau has been a member of the WBA since 2003 and has served on its board of directors since 2007.  In March 2008, she led the effort for the WBA’s “Creating Pathways to Success for All” program, which focused on challenges facing women of color as part of the association’s ongoing “Initiative on Retention and Advancement of Women.” At Weil Gotshal, she is an active participant in the “Women@Weil” program, the Diversity Committee and the Black Attorney Affinity group. She is also a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association and the D.C. Minority Attorney Networking Series; she has previously held positions as an appointed member of the American Bar Association and as the deputy chief of staff to President Vanita Banks at the National Bar Association.
