Jessica C. E. Gienow-Hecht (Grad ’95 L/M) serves is chair of the History Department at Freie Universität Berlin and serves as director of the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the university.. Her book, Sound Diplomacy: Music and Emotions in Transatlantic Relations, 1850-1920, was published in June with the University of Chicago Press. She is the editor of the series, Explorations in Culture and International History, published by Berghahn Books, New York and Oxford. Her first book, Transmission Impossible: American Journalism as Cultural Diplomacy in Postwar German, 1945-55, was published by Baton Rouge: Louisiana State U. Press and received the Stuart Bernath Prize and the Myrna Bernath Prize, both given by the Society for the History of American Foreign Relations. Her husband, Heiko Hecht (Grad ’91 L/M), is a professor of psychology at the University of Mainz, Germany. They have four children and live in Wiesbaden, Germany.

She is pursuing a master’s of professional studies degree in real estate at Georgetown University. Ms. Tabalujan is engaged to John Herzog and is planning a Spring, 2010 wedding. Ms. Tabalujan also received a gold medal at the Virginia Commonwealth Coventry State Games for Womens Singles Badminton and is eligible to participate in the 2011 National State Games of America held in San Diego, Calif.

Louisville, KY, 1945-1980
and Freedom on the Border: An Oral History of the Civil Rights Movement in Kentucky (co-authored by Catherine Fosl), both by the University Press of Kentucky. Ms. K’Meyer lives in Louisville with her husband and fellow historian, A. Glenn Crothers, and their two children, Colin and Norah Crothers.

Charlotte Hudgins Zito (Col ’03 L/M) and her husband, Ari Zito, celebrated their son, Isaac Hudgins Zito’s, first birthday on Feb. 6, 2009. Mr. Zito received his master’s degree in English from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College in August. Both Mr. and Ms. Zito teach English at Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, Va., and Mr. Zito is director of the Breakthrough Collaborative at Norfolk Academy. Ms. Zito ran in the Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in April and is training to run in the Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon in September.

Mark D. Bateman (Col ’79, Engr ’86 L/M) received a division award from Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems and Sensors for his leadership, coordination and ability to bring teams together on the Virginia Class Submarine program. Mr. Bateman is a senior staff systems engineer with Lockheed Martin, based out of the Undersea Systems facility at Manassas, Va., and has worked offsite at the Electric Boat Corporation shipyard in Groton, Conn., since the start of the Virginia Class submarine program in 1996. He serves as the engineering liaison to the shipyard and supports development and test of the sonar, architecture and combat control subsystems. He resides in Ledyard, Conn., with his wife Paula. They have two children.

John R. Snoddy IV (Col ’02) is the environmental director of Kyanite Mining Corp. in Dillwyn, Va. His most recent mine reclamation project received the 2009 Virginia Mineral Mining Reclamation Award presented by the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy and the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance. Mr. Snoddy’s project, the reclamation of the United States’ first kyanite mine, received both the Best Quarry and Overall Winner categories of the award. These awards recognize companies that have made extraordinary efforts to implement innovative techniques which protect the public and the environment from potential adverse effects of mining. By winning the state award, the project is automatically nominated for the national reclamation award.
